Editorial review from Citysearch 1/26/2014

My wife and I attended a retirement dinner here and the place was a zero or less actually. I will mention the very little good before the bad. The serving staff was courteous and prompt. The food was subpar. Salads were bagged and the added items... cucumber and tomato were limp and not fresh. The steak was pedestrian and tolerable at best. Very little seasoning and definitely not hand cut as you would expect for the price. But, to add insult to injury I ordered two bottles of wine. One for my wife and I and one for the honoree and her husband. I was charged a mandatory 18% gratuity even though it was only two bottles of wine and I was not the responsible party for the event check. The general manager advised me that was their policy and that's that. Perhaps, that's that is how you should regard this place. It is definitively off my list of any place that I would choose to dine, recommend or spend my hard earned money. It is on top of the list of places to AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!!!! more

GreatFun Place to eat with friends 10/26/2010

I used to go here back in the early 90's when I was stationed in Millington - great time and best steaks! How could they not be - you got to cook them yourself!\r Went here again in the early 2000's and it was just as good as before - if you love steak like I do and you love making sure it is done just right - this is the place to go if you are anywhere near Memphis and Beale Street. more

Sucker punched. 10/7/2009

As an unsuspecting traveler visiting Memphis for a week on business, I decided I would celebrate the passing of mid-week and dine at a ""quality"" steakhouse. I narrowed my search down to two: Butcher Shop or Majestic Grille. I gambled.. and I lost. I expressed to the waiter that I was having trouble deciding between the rib-eye and the New York strip. He recommended rib-eye. Right on buddy.. If you like your steak 60-70% fat then this is the place for you. After I finished the meal he saw my plate and the war zone created by my attempts to find a legitimate piece of meat and had the audacity to comment that ""maybe I should choose the New York strip next time."" Next time? Yea.. probably not. If you are in Memphis and looking for a good steak please dine anywhere except the Butcher Shop. Pros: Close walk to my hotel Cons: The Steak more

Not my favorite, but still very very good!! 7/5/2008

Butcher Shop is one of those places that my mind doesnt automatically jump to when we're heading out for a steak. Usually its between Ruths Chris and Folks Folly (and Ruths Chris usually wins - they have better sides) But sometimes we're burnt out on RC and sometimes we just dont want to drive that far. Thats when the Butcher Shop usually pops into my head. The steaks are good...I have never prepared my own. Like some others have said - whats the point in that?!?! The spinach artichoke dip is, in my opinion, the best in the city. Even better than Houstons. Yup. The potatoes....the ones served with cheese in a gratin dish? Oh. My. Goodness. They are *so* good....skip the baked potato and try them! We go to the one on G-Town Pkwy and they have patio seating. Also another draw when the weather is nice and you want to sit outside! more

Big Disappointment 6/19/2006

Arrived and was quickly seated. Ordered beer and soft drink. Informed by surly manager that one grill was down and that no customer steak preparation on the other grill was possible. Left. Pros: nice atmosphere, good location Cons: surly management more

Did not meet the expectations 4/4/2006

The staff is friendly and they sit you promply but the food is not that great. they give you a choice to cook your own steak or have it cook by the chef (cooking my steak, is't that why I went out to eat in the fist place, because I did not want to cook) neadless to say we had the food cook by the chef and it was tastesless. I do not recomend this place. Pros: Friendly staff, sit promply, ambiance Cons: food is not great more

Great deal for the $$$ 2/18/2006

My gf and I could have eaten the spin dip and cajun shrimp alone and been happy, but our filets were too good to ignore. This place has Folk's and R. Chris beat hands down. It's just a good, basic steakhouse without fuss or formality. They also don't charge extra for 'loaded' baked potatoes like some other places in town. Our waiter was excellent and we never had to ask for a thing - he also didn't bug us either. more

The Best Ever! 7/12/2005

I have visited Memphis three times, and eaten at both locations. Each time, I've ordered the 14 oz. Filet, eaten every delicious bite, and have yet to pick up a steak knife. It's that tender! I've had far less quality steaks elsewhere for far more money. Nobody serves a 14 oz. filet, and those that come close charge a whole lot more! Two weeks ago, I visited the Dallas location, and the steak was just as awesome. Worth the trip from anywhere in the country! Pros: Biggest Filet, Two Locations, Best Price Cons: Not one where I live more

Best Steak of my life! 6/6/2005

I am not a meat eater and I the chef prepared the steak to perfection!!! Highly recommended more

Good fro two 2/6/2005

I wouldn't take the entire family, but it would be good for a night out on the town. Could get pricey. The service was good, but it is extremely noisey and you do sit close together. You can oick out your own steak, I like that. Pros: good steak, clean, service Cons: price, parking, noise factor more

Great steaks! 2/28/2004

Not sure why this restaurant is listed under West Memphis but in any case, I have very fond memories of this downtown restaurant--sorry to hear quality is not the same. They used to have great steaks at a very reasonable price I though. Fun place--service just so-so though. Pros: Great steaks, Fun place, Good value Cons: , Hard to park more

voluptuous 2/9/2003

This is the type of do it yourself restaurant, with a touch of intimacy to make it romantic. more

great steaks 1/13/2003

this is a great place for a great steak. the atmosphere is also great. could have better parking more

take your pick 1/2/2003

10-12 yrs ago, the downtown location was great...not so much anymore. the germantown/cordova location is the way to go, but it's still a gamble on whether or not the food will be that good. Pros: cost Cons: variance in food qual more

Fun Exciting and Delicious 12/23/2002

The Butcher Shop Steak House offers an environment that is comfortable for all, be it a high school prom night date or the setting for closing a business deal. They offer the opportunity to cook your own steak, which you get to pick out, so if there is a problem with your meat it is your own fault. more

Classic American Steakhouse 12/19/2002

The best steak house that I have found in Memphis! Though I must admit that I have not been to Folk's Folly, Memphis is lucky to have a restaurant of this caliber. There are not many others. Excellent steaks that they cook properly. You can select your own steak and cook it yourself if you choose. The salad was fresh, the ambience was that of a classic American steak house, in my opinion. We ate at the one on Germantown Road. Pros: Excellent Steaks, Good Parking, Fresh salad Cons: A bit expensive more

melts in your mouth 12/19/2002

My boss and I were in Memphis for business and our partner, also a local resident, took us to the Butcher Shop Steak House for dinner. We both had the filet and there are no words to describe the piece of meat that we both enjoyed. If my car had no broken down during my honeymoon I would have taken my new bride here for dinner. I haven't stopped talking about my experience yet. This is a place worth dropping a few pennies at. I look forward to going back. Pros: great taste, great atmosphere, great desert Cons: not one where I live more

Butcher Shop Depends 12/19/2002

It depends on which Butcher Shop you go to. The one in Cordova is great but the downtown one leaves much to be desired. The downtown one was the original one but it's gone way downhill. The one in cordova has a better menu, the food is cooked better, and it's a great atmosphere. It's also well priced. My review applies to the one in Cordova and not the one downtown. Pros: Accessible, Great Prime Rib!, Nice House Cabernet Cons: Limited Parking, Downtown Sucks, Busy during Holidays more

Never Again! 12/4/2002

I recently spent two of the worst restaurant hours of my life at the Butcher Shop downtown. The food was okay but much too expensive for what you get. The salad bar was sparse as well as being a server yourself situation. The steak was overcooked and underseasoned. (I chose not to cook my own.) But the worst part was the service. Never have I been so displeased with the service and then forced to leave a 17% gratuity anyway. Needless to say, Never Again! more
