Good Ramen, Great Prizes, Awesome Service... unless it's busy. 2/15/2008

Very low prices compared to any of the large box chain restaurants. Bill for 2 people, 2 drink + appetizer & tip $26. Was our first time there, waitress took about 5-10 minutes to explain everything in detail on the menu. She also brought us samples of a few of the drinks we had never tried. We've only been to 2 other Japanese (different than chinese food) restaurants and they have all been similar, though each with their own flair and style. Not something I would eat weekly, but every couple of months would be fun. As they got busier and busier we got less and less attention, had to wait awhile just to get our check. We are travelling across country read about where we go with movie, restaurant and travel location reviews at justyesterday.spaces.live. com. Pros: Value (price for what you get), ambiance more

Am now a ramen fan. 12/15/2006

I ate there last night with friends. Service is not five stars, but it is an asian place in san gabriel, what do you expect? What they lack in service, they more than make up for in food. I ordered the tenderous beef ramen, my boyfriend ordered the-I forgot the name, the one with lots of slices of pork on top, we ordered a mushroom shrimp tempura to share and I had their iced milk green tea. The ramen was, for lack of a less dramatic description, like heaven in a bowl. The best part about my ramen was the beef and the soup. The ramen was just ok. The mushroom tempura had a crispy fried outside, and when you bite into it, its like biting into mushroom broth. So good. The milk green tea I had was too milky and I wouldn't order it again. Everything was reasonably priced. The tab for my boyfriend and I with drinks, tax and tip came out to be around $27, not bad. Pros: food. Cons: none yet. more

""A"" rated friendly Japanese style family restaurant. 9/30/2006

I would pass by this restaurant at least 3x's a week for about 1 year and now I visit this place at least 1x a month. I would notice that they always had customers but I was reluctant to go inside, feeling it would most likely not replicate the real Japanese Ramen flavor, which was what I was looking for. I have been to Ramen joints in Japan and to my surprise, the Ajisen Ramen restaurant served ramen that is very close to the real flavor of Japan. Ajisen Ramen specializes in a soup base of pork called ""Tonkotsu."" The oil comes from the pork and is a full flavored soup. I do wish they had soy sauce ramen (my favorite) which is a clearer broth but I was still satisfied with their Curry Pork Cutlet Ramen, Beef Ramen and Premium Pork Ramen. You can also alter the flavor to tomato, mild Curry or Spicy hot flavor. What I also enjoyed was that the menu not only had ramen, there were rice dishes (love the Japanese and Eel fried rice), Pan Fried Noodles called ""Yaki-Soba"" and several tasty side orders called 'snacks' such as the Mushroom Shrimp Tempura, Fried Tofu, Kani Fish Roe Cucumber salad and homemade Gyoza (dumplings). Incidentally, their Asian drinks are pretty good and their small menu of desserts are cute :) If you don't mind a small Japanese family style restaurant (not the typical Beef-Teri or Chicken-Teri restaurant), in an out-door shopping center, it wouldn't hurt to go check it out and see for yourself. I prefer larger restaurants so I go to the Ajisen Ramen in Temple City. It's larger with 2 sections, stands alone with own parking lot and plenty of street parking. Price: $4.50 - $8.50 more

MSG Ramen 9/16/2006

In cantonese Ajisen ramen is 'may cheen'. MSG in cantonese is 'may jing'. They should change the name of the regular ramen from 'may cheen ramen' to may jing' ramen'. That is what people in Hong Kong says it. Sure the soup is flavorful thanks to MSG, but a real chef does not need MSG to enhance food. The only thing worth calling on the menu is the original 'may jing' ramen. The other ramen just has extra fixings which is not worth the price. I also do not like the owner. I remember there were so many people waiting out in the hot sun and the owner was dining with some friend on a table where she could have gave it to the diners. Pros: I don't know Cons: MSG, owner more

Average at best. Ramen for people who like greasy soup. 8/31/2006

Yes this review is very personally opinionated, but that's the point of review isn't it? Pros: Average, not so bad food. Clean inside. Cons: Small and crowded. more

Really good ramen! 5/19/2006

I'm picky about Ramen, but this place was great! If you're looking for good ramen, a nice place with decor & ambience (yes, you can take your date there), you'd like this place! We waited about 15 minutes for a table, but it was worth it! I'd definitely go back. The service was ok (it's a busy place with few servers), not the best but not too bad, either. Pros: good ramen!, easy to park Cons: gets a bit crowded more

Very tasty, quick and satisfying 2/28/2006

While there's nothing fancy about Ajisen, it's clean and sleek. Service is friendly, helpful and speedy. We've enjoyed the spicy pork ramen, the crunchy California roll, the cute potstickers, the curry beef ramen and the panfried noodles. While it's not dining at its finest, it's good Asian-style comfort food. Pros: comfort food, fast, service more

Not just another Japanese Fast Food 2/2/2006

Ajisen Ramen is such a favorable accident for us ------ serendipity as they say; We stumbled on this nice restaurant coz we noticed that it was always full of people every time we passed by the San Gabriel area; the food, the service and the ambience did not disappoint us at all. We are not too big on ramen but it surely was great (esp the tenderous beef) but if you're not big on meat, they have a great selection of ramen. We truly love the sides -- baked tofu, dynamite, fried chicken, inoki/beef, calif rolls, just to name a few. O and they just opened a new branch at Encinita and Las Tunas, which is great coz they have their own parking now. Don't waste time---- drive to Ajisen Ramen and enjoy the great food. By the way, they're reasonably priced as well. Pros: Reasonable, Good parking, Great food Cons: Gets full easily more

Excellent food...wish there was one by West LA! 1/15/2006

This restaurant is wonderful! I have no idea what the previous reviewer is talking about in regards to the MSG. I'm very sensitive to it (breakout in an itchy rash) so the first time I went, I asked my waitress before ordering what has MSG in it and she said they don't use MSG and she was right, I go as often as I could and have never broken out in a rash and I have ordered plenty from the menu. I usually dont order appetizers but I must with them because they have an array of delicious options...my favs are the California roll with masago, beef enoki and tofu with masago/mayo baked on top. The only bad thing is I live in West L.A. so the only time I get to eat there or the one located in Temple City is when I visit my mom on the weekends! Pros: Service., Food., Nice decor. Cons: Too far for me., No phoning in orders. more

Absolutely the WORST PLACE I'VE BEEN TO 12/8/2005

I ordered their featured ramen noodle bowl and I was horrified by how an establishment could actually serve food like that and charge almost $8! It was worse than the ramen you would buy at the store. What a waste of money for a bowl of MSG and preservatives. more
