thai restaurant is no novelty anymore. people have learned to go beyond just pad thai, pineapple fried rice, and tom yum gai. the general "mainstream" public has become more sophisticated about southeast asian cuisine, and our palates have become pickier. yet, krung thai is still, after all these years, san josé's #1 pick for thai cuisine and with good reason.
as long as you'r not a total local yokel, you've heard of hyungjei galbi ("brother's bbq") in san francisco on gearly street. krung thai is like brother's in 2 ways:
1) both restaurants keep winning readers' choice awards in local magazines year after year after year for decades.
2) both restaurants are funny in that each have two location really close to each other on the same street. i.e., brother's has a #1 and #2 on geary very close to each other, and krung thai has a #1 and a #2 on winchester very close to each other.
the newer and nicer-looking #2 location gets more crowded on a weekend night. both locations are consistently good, but #2 has the nicer atmosphere.
