If you sign up as a zoo member, this turns out to be a great deal--you get in free all year plus get 50% off other zoos throughout the country (you get a list when you sign up).
After a long day of animal watching the kids can run around the fountain at the center of the zoo--they even provide cabanas where you can change.
If you're not into that, you can watch your kid go around the merry-go-round at the east side of the zoo for $2 a child. The money goes towards animal food.
I think the best animals to watch are the otters.....they are almost always seen swimming and doing black flips into the water.
