It's not exactly hard to find a shop that sells sporting goods in Manhattan. The island is crammed full of retail stores, after all. However, it is quite hard to find a truly good, general purpose sporting good store. In my experience, Manhattan sports stores tend towards being either chains or specialists. Chains are good if you know what you want and don't need service, since they have low prices. Similarly, you might need a specialist if you are really into mountain-climbing/roller blading/whatever your extreme sport is. But what if you just want good sporting equipment, aren't an expert, and need some good professional advice on what you should get? I think Paragon Sports fills that role pretty well. They're probably not as cheap as the discount chains, but their prices struck me as reasonable. Their staff for the most part know what they're selling, which is increasingly rare in this world of chain stores. Well worth a look if you need quality sporting gear.
