Sensei Shiina is a 70 year old Judo teacher with over 40 years of teaching experience. At the rank of 8th dan black belt, he is easily one of the highest ranked Judokas in the US. With a laundry list of experience, I first trained with Shiina at St Johns University where he has run the club for quite a few decades. A transfer of schools forced me to attend a few different dojos. Having been able to compare teaching, I can honestly say that Shiina has one of the all around best styles. While other places sometimes focus too much on standup, you learn the perfect mix of standup, ground fighting, chokes, and locks here. Sensei also has a no nonsense way of progression. Get it right and move on. That being said, he takes the belts very seriously. You definitely have to earn it. What makes him a great teacher besides his wealth of experience is his sense of humor and willingness to still physically work with students. Just don't be a jerk and throw him hard. He is after all 70 years old. Cost of attendance is relatively cheap. 60 dollars a month for once a week and 90 for twice a week. While its not cheap to the naked eye, remember that Tae Kwon Do and Karate cost leaps and bounds above this price. This place is a gem. Sensei spent his early life training Judo in Japan for hours and hours each day often going without breaks or water. In the 70s, when all the Tae Kwon Do dojos popped up, Shiina grew tired of all their tough talk so he challenged them all to fights. They all declined saying that theres no honor in fighting like that. Shiina says that they said no because they couldn't win. At 70 years old, he is strong as an ox. I wouldn't want to fight him when he was in his 30s either.
