When we first got Internet about 10 years ago, we had dialup. Yes, it did tie up our phone line. Later we ended up getting a second phone line. I can't remember when we got Cable, but we have had it for what seems forever and I personally would not trade it back to dial up. We have Adephia .. well, did have and it has been bought out by Comcast so we're in the process of being switched. The one thing is that it is expensive, but we have 3 computers, my husband and I each have one and our daughter does as well .. and we can all be on our computers at the same time. Where we are here in Colorado Springs, we have a "wireless network" which has worked fine too. We have a lap top that we can move from one room to the other or from down stairs to the upstairs. I suppose we could do the same with dial up with the lap top. But with dial up there could only be one on at a time unless we had 3 phone lines. We also have Adelphia cable for the TV's in the house so having the same company for it all has been good too. I am not anxious for it to be Comcast as someone said our rate will go up. We have not been told that. I don't like dealing with either company when there is a problem; however, in Colorado, we have had good service so far. Friendly people when you eventually do reach a live person. To me, it is worth the extra we pay because hubby and I are both retired so we do spend time on the Internet but we wouldn't if we had dial up.
