Businiess name:  El Museo Del Barrio

Review content:
One of the foremost Latin American cultural institutions in the U.S., El Museo specializes in the arts and culture of Puerto Rico. El Museo presents art exhibitions of contemporary and historical scope, and special events such as film festivals, lectures, symposia, performances, concerts, and festivals. I've visited the museum many times to view its collections as well as attend special events. The Museum houses a permanent collection of 8,000 objects features paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and photographs by outstanding Puerto Rican and other Latin American artists, spanning nearly 800 years of history. The core of the pre-Columbian collection consists of rare artifacts created by the Arawak Tainos, the indigenous inhabitants of the Caribbean basin at the time of Columbus' voyage to the Americas. The pieces are fascinating and the colors in the artwork are brillant and often shocking. The Museum is teeming with families on weekends, who come to enjoy both self-guided and organized tours, performing arts, and workshops. Lots of group programs and workshops are available and school kids can enjoy a hands-on workshop using various art materials--this is a lot of fun. Call ahead for reservations. www.elmuseo.org
