What can you do to make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities? Help out a group called ADAPT. They have been around since the late 1970's. They started out sitting with their wheelchairs chained to buses because there was no accessible transportation at that time. When they accomplished that goal they started on a new goal which continues until this very day and that is to get people out of nursing homes who do not want to be there. Over the years they have been a part of some pretty big landmark legislation for people with disabilities. The ADA (The American’s with Disabilities Act), The Olmstead decision, and other very important legal cases. They have been trying to get MiCASSA (The Medicaid Community Service and Supports Act) passed for years. They could really use your help on that with writing letters to your congressman and Senators to sign on to MiCASSA. If you want to learn more about MiCASSA click here. http://www.adapt.org/casaintr.htm or here http://www.adapt.org/freeourpeople/micassa/mi-qanda.htm You can also help ADAPT by going to there non- violence civil disobedience actions twice a year. You can also start your own ADAPT chapter. There is NOT an ADAPT chapter in all 50 states. Some states have more than one chapter If you have heard of ADAPT at all you have probably heard about the arrests or the blocking of streets or roads. We are very serious about protecting our brothers and sisters from forced incarcerations. The arrests and the blocking of things makes the news, but there is so much more that you can do, educate people about what is happening in silence to people with disabilities, make phone calls, talk to you legislature and congress. To learn more about ADAPT go to http://www.adapt.org We need more people to help in protecting the rights of people with disabilities. Those who can not speak for themselves and the child of today who are the adults with disabilities of tomorrow.
