Review content:
One of my favorite places to go when in Charleston, SC is the Old City Market. The land on which the market sits was donated by a wealthy Charleston family in the early 1800s to be used as a marketplace. Originally, I believe it was used to sell food items only, but today more than 100 vendors sell everything from local foods to souvenirs. This is one spot where you can always find the ladies who weave and sell sweet-grass baskets. The craft of basket-weaving, passed down from West African slaves, is considered one of Charleston's traditions. This area of town can be very crowded, and some of the items do seem a little "flea market" type, but mixed in are some great finds. I have purchased artwork and jewelry at the market and been really happy with both. It is within walking distance of other great little Charleston shops and restaurants. Well worth a visit!
