Review content:
For the last few years our friends and I have been eating at China Fair restaurant in Traverse City, MI. We like their buffet and lower prices. After a long absence my husband and I were back in town and eagarly looked forward to fun and food with our friends again in September. The usual summer tourists were gone but we have always found available seating without wait anytime because this restaurant is very large with two large rooms plus another for private parties if you want to host a get- together with family or friends.
At this visit in Sept. 2006, prices were slightly higher (no surprise there) and the food was not up to previous caliber. I found the crab legs too dry, the dishes lacking vegetables. This should not have been so since this is fresh vegetable season. I missed the big chunky green pepper, onions, carrots of the various asian dishes. Every day they have crab legs and peel and eat large shrimp on the dinner buffet line. It's always hot and fresh, replenished often. It's nice that they bring your soup to you (after ordering which is free). I always tell everyone that if the Hot and Sour soup is good, the restaurant is good! (so many times the hot and sour soup has a musky taste, not favorable to me). The service is always excellent. Unlike many Chinese eateries, China Fair has quite a dessert table with many sweets that we Americans like.
Take outs are available 7 days a week. They will even deliever with a $15 minimum. Although prices do change, the current prices are Lunch Buffet $6.55 M-Sat 11:30 - 2:30. Dinner Buffet is $11.25 Mon-Thurs. from 5-8:30. On Fri. and Sat. the dinner buffet goes from 5-8:30 for $12. Sunday prices are less at $9.50 from 11-3:30 going up to $11.25 for dinner buffet at 4-8:30.
If you're not up to stuffing yourself with a buffet meal, individual dishes are available off the menu. All are Cantonese Style with a wide variety of beef, fowl, seafood, and vegetarian dishes. I like that they will cook without MSG upon request. Again, I feel their menu prices are fair for the ample portions they serve.
If you ever are in the northern Michigan area, I urge you to visit China Fair in Traverse City. It's conveniently located on South Airport Road beside Radio Shack.
