Frank is a great little place with a cult following in the East Village. Don't be surprised to see a line of people waiting for a table, whether rain or shine, because they don't take reservations. If there is enough room, you can hang out at their little antipasti bar and sip a wine, which all of a sudden becomes a meal in itself.
However, if you do get a spot at a table, enjoy it. Their food is straight-up Italian; with the menu being on the small-ish side, I believe this enables them to perfect it. Their rigatoni al ragu is great, and if they have spaghetti with lamb ragu on the specials - call me, because I'm coming right down there. Other great dishes include the bruschetta appetizer (which should be shared), steak, and the gnocchi. If you are sat at the communal table, experience has shown you wind up chatting away and enjoying your meal with the others sat there as well, if they're willing. With a bottle of wine, this makes for a intimate evening in their cozy, softly lit space, whether for romance or for friendship.
