Very long story, but the high points are the following: My evaporator coil developed a leak and needed to be replaced. I have (had, I guess, since I dropped them for equally bad business practices) a home warranty and was given no choice in contractor. From first visit to replacement, it was almost two months time. Those two months happened to be July and August. When I was told that the refrigerant recycling was not covered under warranty, I asked that the refrigerant be tested (which only costs about $15) and put back in the systemif it was good. They refused and stated the only option was to replace the refrigerant. I was told the refrigerant was contaminated, though they would not perform a simple test to check. When the old coil was removed, I was told that it would be $85 for disposal. To this I told them I would take care of it myself (which is entirely legal), and was answered with vague statements about a requirement that only EPA certified technicians could dispose of the coil. I politely showed the technician my EPA certification, and they still refused to leave the coil with me. Finally, and this is the abbreviated version, their response to the complaint I filed with the Better Buisiness Bureau includes a fraudulent (doctored after-the-fact) copy of the invoice I was given. Absolutely horrible business practices, and they seek only to swindle those who don't know the law. This is likely the reason that they get contracts for warranty work... Update, my complaint to the BBB has been left unresolved after they refused to reply to my rebuttal which quoted sections of the section 608 requirements.
