I was pleasantly surprised by my dinner at Nebo. Great atmosphere the place was hopping when I got there just before 7pm. I started the night off with a new Gluten Free beer, Estrella Daura, a good clean lager made for a great start to the evening Ordering was a challenge because there were over 50 gluten free items on the menu. Talk about variety. Having the added challenge of being lactose intolerant, I had to rely on help from the server. She didn’t fail. She knew the menu well, in fact, when in doubt, she checked with the chef. I was beginning to get a warm feeling about the place. Settling in for my first course, calamari fritti with Mediterranean aioli. Mmmm… The calamari was lightly battered, golden brown and very delicious. It didn’t have that heavy taste that sometimes comes with GF batters. Light and crispy, I was pleasantly awaiting more. I dove into my prosciutto e fichi pizza without cheese, but added, caramelized onions. So sweet! They have 21 pizzas to choose from, plus a whole group of extra toppings. The crust is soft, not the hard thin crust I am used to, an extremely thin focaccia with hints of olive oil and nuttiness with a crunch. The sweetness of the onion, figs against the saltiness of the prosciutto made this a great dinning experience. I was full half way through the pizza, but couldn’t stop. It was that good. I might have liked more of a fig spread rather than cut up whole figs so that I could have had a more balanced fig flavor, but it was very tasty nonetheless. (have I mentioned LOVE figs) I chatted with Carla Pallotta,, half the dynamic duo that runs Nebo. She and her sister Christine, came up with the idea for the Gluten Free menu after a few experimental dinners in their kitchen for a few celiac friends. They have certainly done well. Overall great experience. By the way I failed to mention that I got stood up that night. A couple of friends had to bail at the last minute, but that certainly didn’t dampen my spirits.
