I'm a sucker for cafeterias, because I grew up eating PB & J lunches out of brown bags. In my mind, kids with lunch passes equated to Willy Wonka golden ticket holders. Several years later, armed with superior taste buds, I was thrilled that cafeterias are making their way to Los Angeles. I frequent both the Abbot Kinney and Beverly location; both offer excellent service and the same selection of delicious sides. When I first went to Lemonade, my mom and I were floored by all of the choices. We couldn't make our minds and tasted several of the sides. Our server noticed out indecisiveness and informed us that we can split each side into two. Hence, a two side plate happily became melody of four sides! We tried the following sides: 1) Israeli couscous with wild mushrooms 2) quinoa, butternut squash and whole orange vinaigrette 3) cherry tomatoes and pine nuts in avocado, and 4) sweet potatoes with pistachios All four were delicious, but we favored the sweet potatoes with pistachio and the Israeli couscous with wild mushrooms. We preferred the latter because it just screamed truffle oil! Lemonade also offers stews, soups, and sandwiches. It is a must to try their namesake product, lemonade. They offer several flavors (original, cucumber, watermelon-rosemary, blueberry mint, ginger peach, etc.) and regularly alternate a sugar-free option. Our favorite is the cucumber mint lemonade which is very refreshing. One day on Twitter, I tweeted my love for their cucumber mint lemonade and several ""tweeps"" responded that liquor would pair well with the lemonade (I completely agree!) and that we should head their with flasks! Finally, if you've read my reviews (blog or CitySearch), you know that I have a set of sweet teeth. I couldn't leave without packing up three mini cupcakes at $1/each and one extra-large $4 chocolate macaron. The cupcakes (red velvet, carrot, and chocolate) were pretty tasty for a quick, cupcake-fix, but obviously don't compare to Sprinkles, SusieCakes, and other cupcakeries. The gargantuan chocolate macaron was the better dessert option. It wasn't like a traditional French macaroon, dainty and delicate; however, it was a tasty, brownie-esque option. Pros: fresh market sides, variety of lemonades Cons: long lines (but worth the wait!), not enough parking
