Review content:
On a quiet afternoon in early December, my fiance and I stopped by for our last lunch before driving back to DC. The place was empty aside from 2 tables that were on dessert, so we took our time perusing the menu and the waitress sensing our apprehension and the obvious signs of an ""out-of-towner"" came over and explained some of the specials that I had been straining my neck sideways to read. I went for the Shrimp creole with okra, peppers & ham in a rich tomato sauce over grits with a side of fried okra (can't get enough of it) and my fiance had the Fried green tomato BLT - we both ordered Sweet tea (which was just perfectly sweetened and not sugar with tea flavoring like some other places). No sooner did we order then the place just filled up - both in the inside and the patio outiside (it was in the 60's - got to love Charleston weather). The meals came out and I don't think I ever wolfed down food like that before - tears came to my eyes with every bite - brillantly seasoned, just a hint of heated spice and the side of okra was a meal in itself. I kept picking at the fried tomato in my fiance's sandwich, the remoulade on it was tasty. We had to order dessert after all that - finally after much pomp, I had my piece of Buttermilk Pie, which oddly reminded me of DC's Vidalia's reknown Lemon Chess Pie but way creamier. We also got the Hot Bread Pudding and I've got to tell you that short of the Gumbo Shop in New Orleans, that it was the real deal. The place might be a converted barbershop but they know what they're doing in there. The service was supreme and the atmosphere had no airs about it. We'll be back when we move down there in 3 weeks...yes we will.
