I just went to Dahab last night for the first time in about a year. I used to be a regular at their Westwood Blvd. location, but had only been to the new one once. One of the main reasons I hadn't been there for so long was the reviews I saw complaining about the service--I'd never noticed a problem, but I thought maybe the place had taken a turn for the worse. It seemed a pity, too, because the food at the Westwood location had been so good that I would walk 3/4 of a mile, past literally dozens of other restaurants, regularly to eat lunch there. Anyway, so when my friend suggested Dahab, an old fave of hers as well, last night, I was ready to give it another chance. I was very glad I did. The food was just as I'd remembered. We both ordered chicken shawerma sandwiches--one of the most killer dishes there--and I asked for an extra container of garlic sauce on the side. While we were waiting, we munched on their signature spicy olives and pickled turnip/cabbage with delight. For appetizers we ordered lentil soup and stuffed grape leaves--soup was delicious, grape leaves fairly standard. And then, the sandwiches arrived. As I peeled open the aluminum foil, the orange oil started dripping out--I'd forgotten about that--and running down the side of my hand. I felt like Sancho Panza looking at the oil slicks on a vat of meaty soup--my appetite leapt! I bit off a generous mouthful and--mmm--so good.... Added a blob more of garlic sauce and took another bite--oh yeah! And the light, tart, and herby cabbage salad is just such a nice complement to the garlicky savory sandwich. Washed it down with a big glass of sweet-tart karkadeh, and I was a happy man. The foul (pronounced ""fool"") there is also awesome. In fact the only dish I've every had there that I didn't like was the molekhia--which may have been perfectly fine but was just a bit too unusual for me I guess. As far as service, we were treated like king and queen practically, unlike others--it was 7:30 on a Thursday.
Pros: Food is awesome, interesting dishes, lots of appetizers and desserts.
Cons: Decor is extremely basic and sometimes you can get hooka smoke in your face.
