Review content:
Let me preface this by saying that my friends and I get together every couple of months to try a different NYC steakhouse. We have been doing this for about three years and I can honestly say that BLT Steak would rank near the bottom.
First off our reservation was for 8:30 PM. We were not seated until 9:10 PM. Okay, I understand that we were a group of 10 and sometimes with a larger group these things happen. It would have been nice if they apologized and offered a complimentary drink but whatever, we were having drinks at the bar so all was well.
We ordered our appetizers as soon as we were seated. I must admit that the bread they brought to our table was absolutely delicious and we thought this was a sign of things to come. When the appetizers arrived we all felt the bacon was very good and the shrimp cocktail was pretty standard. The Caesar salad was what you would expect from a decent diner. We were all finished with the appetizers at approximately 9:40 and we subsequently had to wait until 10:30 to be served our main course. We asked several waiters and hosts to check on our food and we were given the stock answer ""it will be a few minutes"". I mean waiting that long between courses was unacceptable. On top of that the waiter is giving us some lame excuse about how he can't put in the steak order until the appetizers have been cleared off the table and it takes about a half hour to cook a steak.....blah, blah, blah There is nothing worse then being lied to with a bogus excuse. Just tell us I am sorry for the delay gentleman but it will be worth the wait or something like. We were very easy going and polite the whole time. Just be honest.
Anyway, when the steaks and sides arrive it was definitely not worth the wait. I shared a porterhouse for to with a friend and you couldn't even tell the difference in texture between the strip and filet side. Despite ordering our Porterhouse medium rare meat was extremely chewy. You pay $84 for you you believe is the best cuts of beef. There is no way that this represented the top 3% or 4% of beef in the country. I bought a porterhouse from the butcher last month and BBQ's it myself and believe me it blew this particular cut (and it didn't take a half an hour...lol)
Between the ten of us we had ordered several different dishes. The braised short ribs I was told was delicious. The Ribeye was way too fatty. The filet was good. The strip steak was disappointing. A friend ordered the American Wagyu Skirt and the portion was so small that were were joking that he had ordered it from the kids menu.
The sides for the most part were also very disappointing. First the good: French fries and mushrooms. The bad: Jalapeno mash (there was no flavor of Jalapeno whatsoever), if it wasn't green in color you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The worst part are the portions. I took 2 tablespoons of the mash and it seemed there wasn't even another full tablespoon left. We ordered 6 sides and they didn't even last 5 minutes into dinner.
Lastly, although the staff was very polite nobody came to ask us how dinner was, or whether the steaks were cooked to our liking. It's nice to be asked and in my experience most places do.
As we were all pretty disappointed we asked for the check without ordering any coffee or desserts so I can't comment about that.
The meal wasn't terrible, but with so many better options in the city why even bother with a below average steakhouse. Off the top of my head in no particular order you would be better off at Wolfgang's, Uncle Jacks, Benjamin's, Ben and Jack's, Del Frisco's, Rothman's, Maloney and Porcelli, Angelo Maxie's, Sparks, Keens....I can go on and on.
