Review content:
My daughter is a mentally challenged 38 year old woman. She has been a camper at Camp Huntington more than 20 years. She started attending Camp Huntington when she was 12 years old. We had tried another camp for 2 years before we found Camp Huntington. The difference in camps had nothing to do with the physical appearance. The difference was in the entire camp philosophy.\r
\r
At Camp Huntington, my daughter was never treated as a handicapped person. She was recognized as a person that had some different needs. She would return to us at the end of a summer having grown tremendously. Each summer she would gain socialization skills, verbal skills, develop inter-personal skills, as well as activity of daily living skills. She learned how to take part in group activities and after many years finally had the courage to go on stage and take part in a camp play. The smile on her face was our reward for having sent her to Camp Huntington.\r
\r
She has never really fit into the real world, but Camp Huntington was and is the one place where she is completely accepted for herself. Over the years I have recommended the camp to many parents of children with special needs. It is a very special place, for people with special needs.\r
