I am a college student whose school doctor told me that I suffer from diabetes. I need to drink fluids. I was told by the adjacent Powell's Books that I could sit down and bring the drink (fat-free milk) I had brought from home in there and read a book. I needed to make an important phone call, and in the middle of it, I notice that the staff is staring at me. \r

The extremely rude staff then start waving their hands at me, interrupting an extremely important phone call. When I have to terminate the phone call, they yell at me for taking a few gulps of milk in their store, and say I can only stay if I buy water. Since they were so rude, I left. But after a lecture at Powell's, some of us went to the coffee shop to socialize. The party I was with ordered something, so I figured I could stay. \r

I still had my milk with me, but I wasn't drinking any, as per their rules. I have been recommended by my doctor to eat frequently, so I put a half a cracker and a 3/4 inch cubed piece of cheese in my mouth. The waiter comes over, in a really loud voice, yells at me so the whole restaurant can hear, saying that they already told me I cannot have food in there. They never told me anything about food, only that I couldn't be drinking milk, which I wasn't. And it wasn't like I was having a whole sandwich.\r

The best part of the story is that it is over 80 degrees out and humid, I have diabetes, and they yell at me because they can't make a two dollar sale off me for a tiny bottle of water. Heaven forbid that because of medical reasons, I should need to bring a large beverage in and have a bite of cheese. Coffee shops are supposed to be a place where you can socialize and feel at home, not profit-driven enterprises that only care about the bottom line on a balance sheet.\r

The people at the coffee shop epitomize our present profit-driven culture, where making an extra buck or two takes priority over actual people's health. I have been to many coffee shops to socialize, have brought in whole sandwiches and beverages, and everything's been fine. I have never had an establishment treat me so rudely, and I will definitely not recommend the coffee shop to any of my friends.
