Stayed here over July Fourth weekend 2003. Got a very nice suite for a decent price, perfect for socializing with another copuple who also had a smaller room in the Shelburne. I saw the rooftop sign, but we were not discouraged. The rooftop bar is closed for renovations, but we and a hundred friends went up to watch the fireworks in the East River (with Empire and Chrysler Bldgs behind us). Great view without the hassle of walking to the uber-crowded FDR. Rooms were pleasant in a faded, dated but very clean way. Not a ton of restaurants and nightlife nearby, but it was quiet. One of the elevators was in and out of order, making getting to the high floors a hassle, but the staff was very friendly/helpful. Pros: Value, generous room size, rooftop view Cons: not "hip"
