I can't understand why this restaurant has won awards for its pizza. Maybe the cook was having on off night - I usually like to give a restaurant more than one chance before I judge it, but as I don't live in the Charlotte area, Luigi's only got one shot with my family. We ordered two pizzas - pepperoni and sausage for the kids; spinach, broccoli, and sundried tomatoes for my husband and me. Unfortunately, neither pie was any good. The crust wasn't just thin and flaky (like it is supposed to be) it was thin and BURNED. The cheese was burned to a crisp in places, there was barely any sauce and the spinach pieces were so huge I felt like I was eating salad leaves. I usually love NY pizza and as a frequent visitor of Brooklyn, I know how it should taste - and not like what we experienced tonight. \r \r On a more positive note, the staff was extremely friendly and the manager (owner?) enjoyed talking baseball with my Mets fan son. Another nice trait, is that a clear glass window allows customers to watch the chef as he makes and tosses the home-made crust, forming it into the circular pie shape. My son got quite a kick out of watching it tossed into the air and was so absorbed, he did not complain once about the time we had to wait. It was a good thing too because other than that, there isn't much to look at. Besides some illustrations on the walls, the decor is minimal though not quite bare, actually quite resembling what a pizzeria in NY looks like. (Small tables, vinyl seats, etc.) I'm just really sorry we didn't enjoy the pizza. We'll probably give it one more shot, when we return to Charlotte next summer. \r \r Over all, I'd recommend giving it a visit, only plan to eat in, not carry out. Unless you live VERY nearby, the pizza will lose it's heat fairly quickly, taking away from the enjoyment. And sadly, they do not deliver. Perhaps if we'd actually gotten to eat our pizza while it was still piping hot, it might have tasted better. Pros: Good parking, friendly staff, get to watch pizza being tossed Cons: Overrated, too expensive
