Medically, I got pretty good care, even if it was overkill and wasteful at times. I refused several tests because they were repetetive and even unnecessary (an IV bag of magnesium for a normal magnesium blood count?). But as a patient I felt very disregarded and even mistreated. All tests that were done in the emergency room were repeated after I was admitted, very wasteful and more important to me keeping me up for two hours after I got into my room. Two separate people came in with clipboards to ask me the same questions I already answered in emergency. Where are the electronic files, and the sharing of information? I finally fell asleep at around 1:00 a.m. only to be awakened at 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00 by loud talking outside of my room. Each time it took me a while to fall back asleep. The talking was either about work, or about movies they saw. At one point I stuck my head out and asked them to keep it down, but they looked at me like I was the crazy one. What, talk softly just for the patients who are sleeping in the middle of the night, are you nuts? At 5:00 a.m. they came in to work on my roommmate. At 5:30 a.m. they started on me. Al I did was catch naps all night and I was a wreck. I was there for severe GERD, so bad I thought I was having a heart attack, but they brought me orange juice and coffee in the morning. Does no one communicate with the kitchen about a medically appropriate meal? At one point there was a technician on either side of me taking my vitals and one starts telling the other one about a patient that died that morning in the next room, and how something kept running off of her and as often as he wiped it up it kept runinng. I didn't catch what that was and did not care to know. HOSPITALS DON'T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY. It would be relatively easy to fix most of the above, but my sense is that as long as they are collecting from your insurance they just don't give a damn.
