A hard and dedicated worker my entire life, two years ago I faced the shock of becoming a disabled person incapable of working any longer. Monthly debts such as credit cards, utilities, loans which were previously well within my budget were slowly eating away my savings.
With my savings running out, one evening I attempted to create a budget; I listed my monthly income and subtracted all my monthly expenses. Shockingly, I was coming up negative, in the red.
Revisiting the budget with different scenarios, trying to trim as much as I could, I just could not come into the positive or the black any month.
With the shock of realizing my finances were in disarray and there was nothing, nothing I could do in the short-term to fix it I was scared. I never would have thought I was in a position where bankruptcy would be my best opinion. However, there I was contemplating bankruptcy.
It was late at night and I could not sleep. During the afternoon, I had tried to contact several bankruptcy attorneys, but I was only able to reach legal secretaries or paralegals. All of whom were pessimistic, insensitive, and bleak regarding my situation. I remember one of the paralegals laughed when I indicated my bankruptcy was probably on the easier end of things and probably very straight forward. She then began to quote me an outrageous sum for my case.
Discouraged and unable to sleep. I found Michael Berger's law firm online. On the website was Mr. Berger's e-mail address. I e-mailed Mr. Berger that night detailing my situation, my concerns, my worries.
Feeling that I left out details in the first e-mail that night, I sent another e-mail in the middle of the night detailing more of my situation.
Morning came, I hadn't slept. Promptly at 8:00 A.M. I unexpectedly receive a phone-call. To my relief and gratitude, it was Mr. Michael Berger himself. He was confident my situation was not only going to be manageable; it would be very cost-effective. He was not only confident but more importantly he was sympathetic regarding my situation. I can't express enough how grateful I was to receive a reassuring phone-call after a late night of being so frantic and worried.
That was just the beginning. Throughout the entire process Mr. Berger's team--Ms. Nicole and Ms. Phan in particular--were meticulous, understanding, and compassionate.
When it finally came to my bankruptcy hearing, it was a simple, ""yes,"" and,""no,"" to a few questions; Mr. Berger's staff had appropriately submitted all documents necessary and promptly to the court. The judge himself was impressed.
