In 2005, my wife and I had the pleasure of spending four fantastic fall days in NYC. We asked everyone we knew, within our circle of friends and also within my company, for restaurant recommendations prior to our journey. Many people sent us recommendations with long descriptions of their experiences there, and for the most part, the recommendations were for all of the ""famous"" restauarants that everyone has heard about. We lived in San Francisco for 8 years, and while there it was always a goal of ours to frequent the smaller restaurants with less tourist appeal, but great food. For the most part we were successful and we've maintained this philosophy when visiting new cities. One of my colleagues responded to my restauarant suggestion request with a one word answer, ""Rachels."" That's it, no description of the food, the ambiance or anthing else. Somehow, that one word suggestion was exactly what I was looking for. This particular gentleman spends a lot of time in NYC on business and this has become his favorite place. Enough said. We enjoyed Rachels so much on our first night in the City that we went back again the very next night. The food was fantastic, the waitress was excellent, the ambiance perfectly romantic. We felt as if we'd found a New Yorker's favorite, similar to the favorites we held as San Franciscans. Don't take my word for it though, check this place out for yourself!!
