Review content:
I have always liked Sports Column because of the prices and service. The bar tenders are nice and the usually sport fan crowd are my kind of people. Before my latest experience I would have given this bar a solid 4 star rating, but sadly, I can not longer ignore a few basic problems.
First off, I would say I fall into the normal category of public bathroom users. Above all, I value my privacy. Of course I also want a bathroom that has been cleaned and stocked with soap and paper towel, but what I really want is to go about my business (get in, get out).
The problem with Sports Column is they have a bathroom attendant. This is fine, but IMHO totally unnecessary. This is not a 4 star hotel. This is a sports bar. Yes this ensures that the bathroom is clean and well stocked, (he's got mints and cologne in addition to soap and paper towel) but because the man has a tip jar I see patrons who would otherwise wash their hands bolt for the door to skip out on tipping. Or perhaps more awkward, using his services and not tipping. I'm not a germaphobe, but I would rather use a bathroom where people are washing their hands then one that spotless, and no one is washing their hands. It's an impossible situation, the attendant holds the soap and paper towel in-hand so you have to reach out to him in order to wash your hands. There are times when I have tipped and times when I simply had no cash or was not in the tipping mood. But I have always washed my hands. I've been friendly, but I have always felt weird about the situation. I shutter to think of using the stalls for a prolonged stay knowing the guy is in standing there, within earshot of everything.
OK. not too big of deal, right? But, this is just part of the problem. The last time I was there I resolved to avoid the situation completely. My smug self convinced me that I would simply not make a trip to the bathroom. As the night went on I found that this strategy simply wasn't panning out. If you have to go, you have to go.
It was shortly after last call when I really needed to go. As I walked over to the bathroom, I saw a man coming out and a another going in. The door was open enough during this time to where I could see with relative certainty that the attendant was not working that evening! I minor bonus, but all that really mattered was that I was going to be able to use the bathroom. Or was I?
I arrive at the door tailing another guy who looks like he has to use the bathroom as much as I do, when a ""security"" guard from the back comes running up and side steps in front of us to inform us that the bathroom is closed.
Pros: great bar service, good happy hour prices
Cons: security and bathroom attendant
