Hunted with this guy years ago. he picked us up a day late at the hotel. We got into camp in the dark, slept in minus 30 temps in a canvas tent. Upon hunting Day 1, he pointed out the way he wanted us to still hunt elk down this mountainside. He drove us to the top and dropped us off for a semi-guided 2X1 hunt (although we paid for fully guided 1x1 hunt). Three feet of snow prohibited our travel after 1 hour and we turned back to go to the truck, luckily he was still in it with the heater on, sleeping. By Day 3 we had seen NO elk or tracks. He took us to another ranch and turned out we didn't have permission to hunt there. We hunted anyway and again didn't cut a track. We went back to the first camp on Thanksgiving Day and after dinner he told us he would go into town and rent some horses so we could get around better in the deep snow. He returned the following Monday to take us to the airport! No elk, 1 scrawny mule deer. We survived on leftovers from Thanksgiving and whatever other canned goods he left us. This was a lesson in survival and any chance I get I tell people the story of how Bill Montanye left us for 3 days in below zero temperatures with hardly any firewood and nearly nothing to eat. How he ever remained in business is a mystery to me.
