Review content:
My family really enjoys visiting different locally owned hometown restaurants. It is really our main entertainment as money always seems a little tight and you have to eat so why not have fun and try new places whenever we go out to eat. Anyway, we heard about Porter's in a story we read about Stroud's in KC so we investigated and went there yesterday. It seemed a little closer than Stroud's in KC so it won out, although hopefully a trip to KC will come about soon. We ordered a 12 piece meal with potato salad, slaw and mashed potatoes w/ gravy. Chicken- A lightly floured, decent seasoned crust. Two of the breasts were great, one was a little over done and another was shoe leather. I have never seen anything more overcooked except a french fry that has made it through four or five frying cycles at Hardee's. We also had a thigh that looked like the matching shoe for that overdone breast. The remainder of thighs were also a little bit over done. Wings were all pretty good. The chicken color of our bucket ranged from beautiful golden tan to bronze to semi sweet chocolate! It kind of makes sense now why when we pulled up at 12:37p on Tuesday that there was only two cars in front of their restaurant. Three more people came in while we waited for our order to pickup their called in order. One couple was at one of their very, very limited seating. 2-3 tables?? Definately a take out joint. Our sides got mixed reviews from my family, Potato salad- very creamy with a sweet and strong dill pickle juice overtone. I liked it my wife did not. Slaw was OK. Way over minced, somewhat mushy. Potatoes-Instant potatoe!! Gravy- out of a can? Bottom line- I want to go back for the golden variety of their chicken and their potato salad. I doubt my wife will let that happen. Our 4 kids, 10yr-2yr, liked the golden variety of chicken as my wife and I got stuck with mostly the over cooked pieces. We literally had to throw away a breast and thigh because they were way beyond even chicken jerky. We stopped and got the boy's some fries at the drive thru at McD's because they were still hungry after eating the chicken at Blackburn park. Lots of potential, our experience had highs but also some really low low's. Maybe I will try again by myself?
Pros: Cheap Prices, Some of our chicken was great
Cons: Some of our chicken wasn't great
