Review content:
This local restaurant is easy to miss while traveling towards Key West along U.S. 1. Located in a commercial looking building with a big red roof, it is well worth seeking out for those who enjoy great food in a casual but nicely appointed atmosphere. A bar offering an excellent wine list and beer selections is immediatly inside the door. On busy evenings when there is a wait for a table you can get a beverage from the bar and relax in the comfortably furnished waiting room to the rear of the dining area. Be sure to take note of the pictures of the fishermen and the Keys of yesteryear along the walls. An explanation of the odd name is found on the back of the menu! Table settings are simple yet pleasant . Service is very attentive without being overbearing or rushed. Wonderful home made soups and daily specials are listed on the chalk boards in each of the two dining rooms and the servers are happy to recite them for you as well. The menu offers a creative selection of both fresh fruit and green salads, fresh local seafood, pasta, chicken and meat entrees. Portions are generous with attention paid to presentation. If lamb is on the menu when you visit, don't miss it. And the duck is the best to be found anywhere. During the peak lunch and dinner hours the restaurant gets very busy but still provides quality service while maintaining food quality. Prices are moderate . The second dining area can accomodate group seating. This is one of those places that becomes a favorite after the first visit. Once you've tried The Square Grouper you will certainly go back. The restaurant is closed Sunday and Monday and usually closes for a three week vacation during August. Pros: Excellent food and service in a plesant atmosphere. Good wine list. Good parking. Cons: Reservations not taken except for groups. Not a place for very young or misbehaved children.
