BEWARE!! My wife and I moved from an apartment to a nearby house and hired AMS to moves about 20 pieces of large furniture (bed, couch, dresser.). We hired 2 guys to do the job, figuring it should take about 3 hours (loading, transportation, unloading). The rep from the Richmond branch (Dominic) explained that the movers would show up with tools to disassemble items like the bed, dining room table, etc., and then reassemble them in our new place. The movers did not show up with ANY tools at all ? not a single wrench or screw driver ? so I had drive to my new house 2 times to bring them the tools that they needed to complete the job. THEN, one guy sat in the bed of the truck while the other guy carried out furniture and other items. Only when it was absolutely necessary did the guy lounging in the truck come in to help. So I called the Richmond branch and spoke with Dominic about why one guy was sitting in the truck, expecting that this would anger Dominic who would then remedy the situation. No. Dominic proceeds to tell me that this is their policy: one guy stays in the truck ?protecting? the furniture while the other guy does all the moving. When I said that this was a preposterous policy, he confidently responded: ?Sir, what happens if both guys are moving and someone comes by and steals your lamp out of the truck. You would want to hold us liable for this, so we keep one guy in the truck in order to avoid this situation.? Nice try, Dominic. Your guys aren?t moving lamps. They?re moving bureaus and couches. No one is going to pass by the back of the truck and clandestinely swipe a couch. So my wife called Gabe, the manager of the branch, the following Monday. Gabe initially sounded outraged that we could be treated like this. ?Did this really happen, Ma?am? This is inexcusable. Let me call my driver and I?ll call you back tomorrow.? Of course, Gabe didn?t call back tomorrow, or the next day, or ever. So we called. And called. And called. And left message after message. And still haven?t heard anything. Nice scam they?ve got going over there. All we asked for was to be credited an hour of our time for the travel I had to do to get your workers the tools they should have had to complete the job. And we don?t even get the courtesy of a return call from Gabe. As a point of reference: in July of 2007, we moved to Richmond from Buffalo, NY, and the 3-man moving crew emptied our entire apartment in Buffalo (3 bdrm apartment, with full attic and basement) in just under 3 hours, and AMS's two workers couldn?t move about 20 pieces of furniture in that same amount of time (we ended paying for 5 hours). It strikes me that during an economic downturn, when people are buying less houses and thus requiring less service from moving companies that AMS would endorse this kind of incompetence. I don?t expect any justice regarding this situation; I don?t even expect a response from this email ? AMS has already demonstrated how it treats its customers. I?m just disappointed that AMS could endorse a company that engages in such egregious business practices. It is truly shameful. Ask friends for help with the move. It's cheaper. AVOID AMS!! Pros: None Cons: RIP OFF!
