I was treated by Dr. Crist in the early 1990s and, to this day, have regretted my experience. I was treated for an overbite which involved the extraction of two pre-molars on the right side of my mouth, one on top, and one on bottom. A substantial portion of the treatment involved moving all of the teeth to the LEFT of the extractions towards the right to fill the gaps left by the extractions. As a result, the centers of my teeth were no longer aligned with the middle of my face and were, in fact, a half-tooth-width off from the middle of my face. After a couple of years, I saw no improvement in his efforts to realign my teeth to their appropriate position. Deeply discouraged by the appearance of my teeth and the seemingly long length of treatment (about 4 years total), I requested that he remove my braces prematurely so that I could resume treatment elsewhere. He obliged after giving me and my mother quite a bit of attitude, however, unbeknownst to me at that time, I believe he retaliated by sloppily removing the glue (which binds the braces to the teeth) and drilling deep into the enamel of my teeth in several spots. I have since had additional orthodontic treatment to correct the damage caused by Dr. Crist (misalignment and uneven wearing of my teeth as a result of that misalignment) and had bonding applied to the indentations in my enamel. My teeth are still not and will never be centered with my face, however, they are much better than they were. Had I been older and wiser at the time of my treatment with Dr. Crist, I might have taken legal action.
Please do your homework when selecting an orthodontist, just as you would in selecting a medical doctor. Consider my experience and the experiences of others who have posted negative reviews of Dr. Crist on the Internet. There are many competent orthodontists in the Kansas City area, you just have to do some work to find them. I highly recommend Dr. Fry in Overland Park.
