When I first came to town i was informed PAULS was a different sort of store but one which I would find myself visiting more and more as the eyes went by. I honestly thought people were nuts to think this place was so great! I mean it is a beat up old building on Hwy 1, next to WESTERN WORLD.....it has these ancient cash registers, little bits and pieces of all sorts of stuff from electrical, to plumbing supplies, to pet food, to the odd Hawkeye item and even OSH KOSH apparel. On top of all that, the place doesn't even have a phone number that is available for public use! I asked one time WHY they didn't publish their number and received this reply....."if you can't call about an item, you will visit instead and if you visit, you will most likely buy." Interesting answer, I have always thought.
It is funny though, they do have items here that you can't find elsewhere....take DAMP RIDS for example, these little gems suck up the moisture in the air and deposit it in either a metallic pouch or a little jug....it's really a neat product, you "rid" yourself of excess moisture....something that is prevalent in Iowa in the summer, let me tell you!
This is really a nice store. The prices are reasonable....the merchandise is well marked.....the store, nicely organized and the personnel are all friendly and willing to help when the need arises. All in all it is a fun store to visit and one I regularly shop at for various items not found elsewhere.
Now that is my story......take it or leave it....just let me tell you this....PAULS is Iowa City's best kept secret.....so keep it to yourself! :-)
