Leather Recliners - two 10/27/2010

I purchased two blue leather recliners 4 years ago. The recliners rocked but did not swivel. Because of this, it was difficult to arrange furniture in the family room. Also, the foam in the seats of each recliner needed replacing, and one of the recliners had a split about 1 to 11/4 inches long in the leather in the front due to stress on the leather. I called Y and J. Mr. Yarborough came out within a few days. The break in the leather was pointed out, the foam in the cushions, and the request to have the chairs made into swivel as well as rocking recliners. He stated he would check with the Lane company to find out if they had swivel mechanisms which could be used. He called back within a few days with the news that the swivel parts were available and gave the price. My husband and I stated we would like to have the work done on the chairs. The price was $537.28. The chairs were picked up promptly. The chairs were returned in approximately two weeks. The swivel mechanism works great. Nothing had been done with the split in the leather. I was really disappointed because this was one of the three items brought to Mr. Yarborough's attention. One of the men that delivered the chairs told me to take a black magic marker to cover the white backing on the split! The cushions looked good. Within two weeks the cushion in the chair my husband sat in looked just like it did before the work was done. My husband is not a large man. I was still unhappy that we had paid the price of a new chair, and after the failure of the cushion, this left only one of the requested items that had been handled. My husband called Mr. Yarborough after about a month. Mr. Yarborough said they would take the chairs back and put in ""better foam"". Why wasn't ""better foam"" used to begin with? I talked to Mr. Yarborough before the chairs were picked up again. I told him how disappointed I was that the split had not been repaired. He told me this would be very costly, about $175. I said if this had been included in the first price, I would most likely have approved the cost because this was one of the three items I pointed out to be repaired. My feelings now however were different. We paid $537.28, the cushion in one of the chairs failed within two weeks, the swivel mechanism works well, but the split was never addressed...I was not told of the extra cost to repair this, so therefore I assumed all three items would have been handled. I was not willing to pay the extra amount now because of what I felt was inferior work. The chairs were picked up, kept for two more weeks and returned today, October 27. The cushions look good. Hopefully, the foam in the cushions will stand up this time. As I stated to Mr. Yarborough, in the future if we have chairs that need repairs, we will purchase new chairs. more

Excellent craftsmanship 2/21/2008

Y&J is a real treasure for this area. They have all of the craftsman needed to build, repair and restore furniture. We had them rebuild a 100-year old couch and they did an incredible job. We also had them price out building an exact replica of an antique bed. It was pricey, but they could do it. They also have an incredible selection of hardwood, handbuilt furniture in their store. They may take some time to complete work, but the quality is outstanding. Pros: Wide variety of services offered, high quality work Cons: Special work is not cheap. more

Work was completely unsatisfactory, and took forever to boot 11/12/2007

We hired Y&J to paint some custom-built unfinished wood cabinets and a few other pieces of unfinished furniture, and were MOST unsatisfied with the result:\r \r - All of our pieces were supposed to be painted the same color of off-white, but when returned to us were painted different shades (in one instance, two visibly different shades on the same piece);\r - The furniture was covered with what looked like overspray from some other paint job involving red, orange, and/or black paint;\r - One cabinet that was supposed to have its finish removed and repainted simply had an extra coat of paint added on;\r - Areas on some pieces had only a very thin spray of paint, thin enough that the color of the wood below was still visible; \r - Some spots were left entirely unpainted, with unfinished wood visible;\r - The furniture was returned twice for redoing, and on the second return, we even sent along a list explaining specifically what flaws that needed to be fixed, yet the problems were still not addressed; and\r - Although we were told that the job would be done in approximately 6-8 weeks, it was about 10 weeks before the furniture was delivered the first time, and over 4 months had passed by the time the furniture was returned the last time to us, still not painted properly.\r \r The only reason we don't resent having to give 1 star rather than no stars at all is that Y&J's manager promptly offered to refund our money after the furniture was delivered the last time in unsatisfactory condition. more
