Best

The food is delicious and the waiters are very welcoming. It has an elegant ambiance that makes you feel relaxed and happy. This is my favorite restaurant in the city.

Kitchen Problems 7/22/2007

I was in Wilshire early making a reservation when I overheard what I thought I be the chef (guy in a white coat surrounded by waiters) being absolutely rude and condescending to his staff. I thought that an attitude like that must be justifiable by stellar food. Not true: when we had dinner later on that night, the entrees turned out to be completely heavy and bland (seabass and ribeye). The fish was dry and totally salty, and the ribeye was chewy and overcooked. The service, however (a young, brunette waitress) was abolutely stellar. The bartenders were fantastic as well: easygoing, handsome, earnest, attentive and funny. I asked them casually what they thought of the chef, and they kindly offered some neutral affirmations, but their faces said it all. Wilshire, your kitchen is suffering!!!! more

This ain't no Disco!! 7/14/2007

We dined at Wilshire last night. This place is really searching for an identity. The place nows turns into a disco at 9pm. No Kidding! A DJ and Dancing in the main dining room..ala Big Daddy's Disco from the 70's. This is no joke. After a meal that consisted of Loup de Mer (serve was not sure if it was wild or farmed raised) that was dry and tasteless; the now standard in many LA restaurants - Short Rib ($30 for a $4 piece of meat )..OK but nothing you couldn't find at fifty other LA restaurants; an OK crab cake and the standard mixed green salad....the restaurant turned into a Disco as we were finishing dinner. Cocktails were very expensive....$12 to $15 for a martini....glasses of wine...start at about $10 for a very small portion....Menu prices were up there with the fine dining restaurants in LA. but food and disco atmosphere does not warrent it IMO. Pros: Nice Patio Cons: Food; Disco atmosphere more

food was so-so but the outdoor patio is gorgeous 7/1/2007

the good: definitely the ambience. it was lovely to have dinner here with all the lights and candles. very romantic and very relaxing. the heat lamps are also strategically placed so you don't have to freeze. the bad: the service is kinda slow and the food was just ok. i did like the mushrooms but it was not special. the pork was also just ok. i did like the fact that they served qupe syrah. there is no ""the ugly"". so, if you want to go on a nice date, this is a good place (plus holly's is next door). but the food won't be great. more

Running out of Steam 6/18/2007

The restaurant design is very nice, but the place is looking a little worn out these days. The bar area floor is a mess, walls need painting and the patio floor has a layer of grease on it. The food is also tired and dated. Our ribeye for two was tough...dungeness crabcakes were tasteless, corn soup was salty, roasted halibut was overdone. Half the dishes we ordered were served warm, not hot. Keep in mind the place is getting premium dollars for (in my opinion) lackluster food and not very attentive service. Pros: outdoor patio Cons: food and service more

Lovely Patio; Good Food 6/13/2007

I recently attended a birthday party here and was pleasantly surprised by the pretty and spacious patio area - I would never have expected it by looking at the storefront. My entire group found the food good (not spectacular, but good) - the only real standout for me was the roast beet salad with mixed greens (a colorful array of small beets tossed with arugula and a light dressing) - delish! I also had the duck, which was fine but not particularly exciting. We did enjoy the syrah (Qupe) - which went very well with the duck and steak dishes. The service was quite earnest but a bit slow and uneven - our waitress seemed a bit harried at times and often disappeared for long spells, but was always very nice. I think this is one of those places I would consider for group events because they have the space available and decent food - not sure I would just come for the food. But then Holly's is right next door so it may be fun to just come and grab dinner and go next door for some dancing. They share the same valet which is cool. Pros: Pretty patio; Decent Wine Selection Cons: Corkage is $25! more

Update - last night I tried it again for a birthday dinner and the food has improved dramatically. The bruschetta with burrata (delish chunk of soft yumminess atop a slice of bread and thick plump slices of tomato, drizzled with olive oil ...mmm), then I had venison (tender, juicy meat which wasn't gamey at all). I also tried my friend's taglietelle with lobster (delicious!). I would definitely eat here again - but note, corkage is a bit outrageous ($25 per bottle). Pros: Pretty patio; Decent Wine Selection Cons: Corkage is $25! more

consisent, quality, original and delicious 6/11/2007

The orginal chef is still onboard and it seems since removing the former kitchen chef- he has taken over and put his original and unique stamp on the menu. It is better than ever. The service has improved greatly and that atmosphere is as always stunning. I wouldn't pay too much attention to what appears to be some disgruntled former employees attempting to discredit the place. I hear nothing but great things about Wilshire around town and every time I experience it, I leave very satisfied. Highly recommended - great menu. Pros: food, quality, consistency, atmosphere Cons: crowded bar in summer more

Much ado about nothing 5/19/2007

We went for drinks and food last night at Wilshire last night. We did this despite the restaurants poor reputation. We had to pass a security checkpoint to get in...sheesh how unwelcoming. Once we got inside we tried to get to the back patio (we were told it is the only good part of the restaurant). What did find another security checkpoint. So we were forced marched back to the main bar which was full of noisy and drunk patrons. We ordered a burger the two glasses of red, i think one was syrah. Both wines were way over the hill and undrinkable. The server told us the wine person likes old wines and they often get rejected by guests. I told the server if I wanted a glass of sherry I would ordered it, we both laughed. The burger took things to another level. $15.00 bucks for an overdone and utterly non unique burger. It reminded me of the six dollar burger Carl's Jr. is offering. We told the server that we were unhappy about the wine and burger and she came back and said there would be no charge. No manager came by to apologize. A management team that is professional would have at least come to apologize for the problems and seek out the details of our complaint so they could fix them. Not this place. We left and whilie we waited for our car we overheard a group of four commenting on the poor service and food they had been served. Pros: Can't think of anything Cons: food, service, customer care more

31 Flavors 5/11/2007

Interesting story by the last poster. Raving about lemonade and Ice Cream Sundaes. Is the Wilshire going after the Baskin-Robins - 31 Flavors crowd. We also heard from our server that the original chef is still there. So why all the hype about change? What is next, spago type pizza....that is an original idea!! Or how about a Mac & Chesse night? Wilshire needs to define itself.... Pros: Another option when you want an Ice Cream Sundae Cons: Same old stuff - different venue more
