My favorite restaurant! 6/29/2005

The food is consistently outstanding and the sides are wonderful. Great wine list with reasonable prices. Some of the reviews mention rude service, but I've been there literally dozens of times and have never seen the staff be rude to anyone. It gets noisy and sometimes you need to wait a while because it's small, and it's popular. It's not cheap, but for the quality of food it's a good value. I love this restaurant, and so does anybody I've gone with! Pros: Wonderful food, Nice people, Good value Cons: Noisy, Not for kids more

Outstanding and friendly yet intimate 5/13/2004

This is one of my favorite restaurants, period. It is the perfect combination of inviting pub atmosphere and outstanding food, with just the right amount of panache to thoroughly distinguish it from a ""common"" tavern. The very friendly service is beyond compare. The atmosphere is warm yet classy. The food is sophisticated gourmet fare superbly prepared with quality ingredients. With a dining experience this completely delightful, the prices are worth every penny. Pros: Sophisticated food, Great atmosphere, Friendly service more

i'm biased, so what? 4/2/2003

I definitely recommend the tavern for dinner. The food is excellent, the wine selection is great, and the service is friendly (as long as you aren't rude). It's busy Thursday through Sunday, unless you show up early in the evening. Go earlier in the week if you hate waiting. I'm a little biased in their favor, since I know the owners and staff. However, there are a few things I'd like to correct from the other reviews: 1)It's fairly popular and gets crowded, meaning that the wait might end up being longer than what you were told initially. 2) Being a neighborhood spot, locals will drop by, get their name on the list, find out what the wait is, and come back later, so it seems like they showed up after you did. 3) The staff isn't rude, unless you've been rude first (although they do like to joke around). Pros: Friendly more

Horrible experience 1/13/2003

We were impressed with the atmosphere at this Washington Square eatery/pub, but our enthusiasm was quickly extinguished. LONG wait - and it sure seemed as though people who came in after us were getting seated before us. Food was ok and the waitstaff was decent . We stayed for drinks afterwards at the bar and it was quite noticeable that the bartenders have a ""better than thou"" attitude. They were clearly busy talking to their friends and weren't very attentive. Moreover, we all felt that they were RUDE! Pros: pleasant atmosphere Cons: bad service, rude bartenders more

Yummy in my Tummy 11/12/2002

I love going to the Washington Square Tavern. The food always blow's my mind. I like getting a table in the back - it's cozy back there. The wine list is great and very complementary to the dishes. The specials are always so enticing - it makes it so hard to choose! All I can say - is go there often!!! more

Who you know! 11/8/2002

Went to this restaurant on a Thursday night. Was told it was a 30 minute wait, waited over an hour while many people (same number in our party) who arrived after us were seated. Apparently being friends with the host is imperative as a few people at the bar also noted to us. more

What a waste of time and money 10/9/2002

My boyfriend and I went there for dinner this past monday. We didn't have any alcoholic beverages, so I can't comment on the quality. I can comment on the food and the service though. Between the appetizer and the entrees we had at least a 35 minute wait. Neither of our dishes was what I would call complicated, so I fail to see what the long wait was for. Looking around, I at least felt better that everyone else near us was waiting just as long for their food. When our dinner did finally arrive I was very disappointed in my Lobster risotto. The rice was undercooked and there was not very much lobster in it. On top was deep fried fennel. In my opinion fennel does not take well to deep frying. We finished up and got out of there as soon as possible. more

neighborhood groove 8/22/2002

little known locals spot that meets need for good food, good value, good scene more

taverns' tastic 8/2/2002

With hardworking and knowledgeable staff. I can't think of a better place to sit and quaff (easy now) a few damn decent martinis, pity that they favour Stella Artois over Spaten these days but at least they have the wonderful Belhaven to compensate. Best neighbourhood bar in the underserved Brookline area, foxy waitresses too! Pros: non-smoking, inexpensive Cons: parking more
