On-time and within my budget!! I want to give a 5 star recommendation for Paul Gulla and \r Walnut Hill. Being unemployed I couldn't have the work done all at once. They have been so considerate in replacing retaining wall and fence sections overtime to allow me to pay for it. They did an outstanding job. Paul is outstanding and his workers were wonderful!! So impressed! Walnut Hill Contracting has just finished an extensive work in my yard today and I am very happy with the results. They were on time and on budget with what we planned for. Grading and leveling of the yard was done very efficiently and with great precision. Paul - the owner - is very knowledgeable (and fun to talk to) and gave us a bunch of ideas and tips on how to organize our green space. His employees are also really nice to work with, responsive and all around great choice for our project. I would highly recommend their services. Thank you guys for all the hard work! more

Editorial review from Citysearch 4/7/2013

In response to Vikas' review of my work, I would like to say that as always, a great deal of effort was put into achieving a satisfactory result, however, there are some customers which regardless of the quality of work or the fairness of the price, can never be made happy. In this case, we provided several additional services and materials toward this end and at no charge to the customer. It appears that Vikas primary concern was to extract as much time and material from us as possible at the cheapest possible price and then to make a very public complaint about the result without addressing these concerns with me directly.\r \r During our initial meeting we reviewed Vikas' property and discussed his expectations. The property had been improperly graded by a previous contractor who had buried the existing sprinkler system and created depressions in the yard that caused water to pool. We agreed on services and types of material to be used. I gave him a start date for all hardscapes of 6 weeks from the date of agreement. Due to the time of the year (fall of 2011), we immediately got on site to deal with the irrigation problem and to try to get grass going. \r \r In terms of the plant material selected for this project, I recommended that Vikas go in person to Weston Nurseries to select his plants. I believe he chose all plant material on line without actually seeing what was in stock as well as the condition of the plants, both of which are important factors at the end of the season in the fall when this was done. He chose twice as many plants as proposed and agreed. Most of the plant material were perennials that lose their leaves and flowers at the end of the season.\r \r I recommended that Vikas meet at a local paver supplier to pick out brick material and color. He chose a more expensive paver than we proposed and refused to pay for the upgrade. Usually there is a 10 to 15 percent waste per paver area depending on how curvy the project is. Normally I absorb some of the cost of the additional square footage needed to cover this “waste” material, but in this case due to the homeowner's refusal to pay the difference for the more expense material that was not part of our agreement, I ordered exactly the specified square footage of brick and made the patio work with the ordered quantity. Vikas expected to get a free upgrade on the hardscaping material, he expected me to install more plant material than was specified in his estimate and all of this for 12% off with one of my coupons.\r \r In my effort to make this customer happy, I lost a fair amount of time and money. I did however deliver exactly what we agreed upon, which is probably more than many others would have done. Despite this, I would have welcomed the opportunity to have a civilized discussion with Vikas about his concerns prior to his lodging this personally spiteful review. Each of my customers is tremendously important to me as a small, local business owner who depends on word-of-mouth recommendations. I would like to personally assure any potential customer that my desire for a satisfactory final product is of utmost concern. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 10/10/2012

Unprofessional, will not keep promises. Don't be fooled by Paul's nice nature. He may seem very pleasant but you will be disappointed by what he will do to your house - atleast I am. First, he promised to finish the whole project in 7-10 days but it took 45 days for him to finish it. Every day one person used to show up and worked for 3-6 hours and that was it! Next, he charged me for a 5 ft walkaway and somehow it ended up to be 4.5 ft. I could see Paul from inside my house discussing it with his worker when he measured it and it was clear that they knew that they had messed it up. When I confronted Paul about this, he started blaming me for increasing the scope of the project. He said that my patio turned out to be bigger than planned and that is why the size of the walkway was reduced by 6"" - thanks for making the decision for me, Paul!! I guess he forgot that he was working in my house and should've asked me what I wanted. \r \r Moving onto landscaping - the shrubs and perennials he got were mostly dead (and obviously he waited until November to get the shurbs, when the common sense would tell you to plant them a little sooner but oh, don't forget, the shrubs are 50-75% off when they are about to die!). But that shouldn't be a bother - he gives a full 1 year warranty on the shrubs!! The only problem is that you have to call him a million times (when you notice that the plants are not recovering after a few months) before he answers your phone. Why should he? You have already paid him, right? Well, you finally get him to answer his phone and he comes after a few weeks and pulls the bad shrubs out and promises he will plant the new ones as soon as he can. And then, ofcourse, he doesn't show up for months. It's mid October again and he is again ignoring my calls possibly waiting for the shurbs to be 75% off again. I have given up any hopes of getting the replacement shrubs and this review should seal the deal (that is, if he cares about reading reviews written for him). \r \r One more thing before I finish my review - when you ask him about the negative reviews on websites, he will have a nice story prepared for it. I bet he will have a nice story for whatever I have written above too, and most likely it will be all my fault. \r \r Please stay away from him!!! more

Paul and his team did the work completely and professionally. He delivered on everything that was promised. He proposed solutions to problems that were both creative and effective. The end result is both attractive and functional. I recommend Walnut Hill without reservation. more

Our back yard looks great - Thanks Paul 5/19/2011

Paul from Walnut Hill was a very knowledgable and straightforward contractor to deal with. He had great ideas on how to solve our drainage issues. He came up with an innovative way to solve this problem by raising our shed to save space and not add cost. The masonry work came out fantastic. We are thrilled with the way our back yard looks. Paul was very willing to do the extra little things with to complet the job without a hassle or nickel and diming us. I highly recommend him and his company more

No Good 4/17/2011

From Natick: these guys are inept. Nothing went as planned in our landscaping project, one problem after another, and the owner used ""quick fixes"" to fix the problems in their own work. Very Unsatisfactory. more

Inexperienced and unprofessional 3/20/2011

Beware using this landscaping company. They are very inexperienced and unprofessional. We hired them to for both hardscaping and general landscaping. It quickly became obvious they did not know what they were doing and were well in over their heads. The owner purported a very different level of skill and experience than he actually had. The end result was a disaster and it will take us much time, money and effort to repair the ""work"" of Walnut Hill Contracting. We were very disapointed and sorry we hired them. more
