Prices are unbeatable, but everything here is sold as-is, so make sure u check carefully for defects, stains, etc. No returns or exchanges. Also, don't expect anyone working there to be of much help-- with anything. Items are usually priced (sloppily) but not labelled with sizes or descriptions, which can make it hard to tell what certain items are (like in the linens dept). If ur using coupons, make sure u present them at the beginning of the sale & if a price tag is missing, the employees aren't allowed to sell it to u unless their manager is present to determine the price (usually resulting in not being able to purchase it, since manager never seems to be there when this occurs). Store is large, semi-organized, not very clean. I suggest not going there if you're in a hurry b/c u have to rummage through things without assistance and it's time-consuming. If u have the patience, though, it's a lot like going to a huge garage sale & u can find great buys here, esp. on clothing & accessories. On 6/28/09, after purchasing a couple of items, I was approached by two police who were called by a store employee. The police said I (and two other black men) had been taking too long to shop (I had been there less than an hour) and ONE of us had reportedly followed a customer to her car. I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THE OTHER TWO GUYS!!! I had just asked one of them to show me where he had found such nice jeans, and he showed me. So, I guess since I had spoken to this one guy, and his brother had left the store, somehow followed a woman to her car, put his purchase in his car and came back into the store, I was lumped in with them and looked ""suspicious."" Regardless, I was told to wait outside for my mom and niece who were still in the store. I was shopping too long, but they hadn't been, even though we three arrived at the same time. All the employees in the store were black, too, so goes to show that discrimination is something EVERYONE can do to each other. I don't know if I ever want to shop there again. My uncle was detained by police after a store clerk reported that he was shopping too long and seemed suspicious. He was the one who drove me and my grandmother to the store, so we all were shopping the same amount of time. They were the only men (and happened to be black) in the store and all were detained by the police. My uncle didn't even know the other two. So whatever is going on in this store needs to stop. I shop in thrift stores in the Detroit area 6 days a week. 90% of the time this Value World is one of my favorites. But I still need to get off my chest what happened in there today. As a special valentines day gift all red clothes were 1/2 off. And now VW is giving out entry blanks to win gift certificates. more
