Excellent Vets for special cases 9/2/2008

These are all top of their field. Most times you don't even get in without a referral. You DO pay for it, however, so definitely beware. They are not rip off artists, they just have state of the art equipment and use the high end anesthesia and keep up with the latest in medicine and treatments etc. These vets are considered the top in their field and are widely respected. It is truly impressive but can really break the bank. \r For example- unless it is absolutely necessary for the wellbeing of your pet- you would not get you animal spayed or neutered here, nor teeth cleaned. Basically any respectable vet can do that. They are for cases regular vets cannot figure out. I too am looking for Dr. April Leblanc- she was phenomenal. Pros: The best all around Cons: expensive more

good but... 3/22/2008

So I have been taking our dogs to SFVS for years. Most of their doctors have been amazing especially Dr. April LeBlanc who sadly has left for another practice. Yes, they are really really expensive but when you have a very sick pet you will pay anything right? But here's a caution: If you happen to get Dr. Anderson, run the other way or demand another doc. She has attitude plus. She has zero bedside manner and considering she ought to be used to bereft dog owners, why is that? She is rude and unwilling to tolerate any discussion of treatment. It's her way or the highway. Our dog waited over 24 hours at SFVS for a simple ultrasound and her answer as to when it would happen was, ""When I get to it."" At a rate of about $1000/day, I think that's unprofessional to say the least. The staff as a whole are talented but it seems they never have time to call you back. Our dog died there unnecessarily because she wasn't monitored carefully enough. Dogs die every day and vets are not miracle workers I know. Pros: they are open 24/7 Cons: expensive and limited communication more

Two cat died here within short period of time. 9/6/2007

if you go to their emergency it will be expensive, try Pet's Unlimited on Fillmore St. in S.F., better and professional.\r I rushed my cat to S.F. Vet Specialists, they whisked the cat away into the emergency room and gave him a shot of valium, without asking me or even letting me know. The vet came out and all she talked about was $$$, she spent more time with us than she did with our cat. They didn't do a damn thing for him. We were there around 2 hrs., they left him on this steel table, without any blanket, they didn't even give him fluids (usually the first thing any ER does), they just shot him with valium. The vet talked about money and how much it would cost to keep him there for one week ($4,000.00!!!).\r These people don't care about the animals, all they care about is the MONEY. In the end when they brought out our little cat, he was 100% different than the cat we brought in...now he was completely comatose, drooling, cold, shallow breathing, eyes fixed and open, beyond sa more

Riduculously long wait times & apathetic doctor 9/3/2007

I took my dog here on Labor Day due to a severe allergic reaction and was warned that it could be a long wait. Understandable. After two hours, the person immediately in front of me comes out of her room and starts to check out. Great, it's finally my turn, right? NOPE! After awhile, I ask what is going on and was told the doctor is not busy with any patients, but decided to do some paperwork. Uh, WHAT??!! At this point, I have already been waiting for over 2 hours, my pet is in dire need as he is turning bright read and is raw in places, there is NOBODY waiting in front of me nor behind me (I am the only one in the waiting room and it's dead quiet) and the doctor decides to do his paperwork now BEFORE SEEING ME? So, his paperwork (lunch?) takes a FULL EXTRA HOUR and when I finally see him, he notices that my dog's in bad shape and uncomfortable. (Really, no kidding? I guess that's why I'm spending my time in an emergency room on a holdiay!) And with that observation, came the prescribing of meds and nothing else. He told me he will only treat the symptons by prescribing meds, but will not go into finding out what's actually wrong. To make matters worse, after we were done, no one at the clinic thought it was necessary to get us the meds quickly (that took another 15-20mins). Hello, still waiting!!! There was actually one receptionist (out of 3 receptionists and at least 2 technicians) that came over during our colossal wait to check up on us and went to the doctor during his ""paperwork break"" to get a time schedule. But otherwise, no one even cared we were waiting, or that we waited the longest out of anyone that had come that day (I know, I asked several people before me). I did get some meds to help ease my dog, but at an expense of $85 just for the appt, a total wait time of 3 hours and 20mintues for a 5 min visit with a Dr. who wouldn't even perform a thorough examination, it's really too much. I will definitely try to avoid this place in the future. Pros: Open 24hrs a day, 7days a week for emergency care Cons: Insensitive staff and very long wait times more

Top Notch Holistic Medicine and Emergency Sevices in the City 1/10/2007

We have had a wonderful experience at San Francisco Veterinary Specialist. Initially, we had gone there for their emergency services and were met with the most professional doctors and a most esthetic environment. Both Dr. LeBlanc and Dr. West who both have assisted my dog in emergency situations were wonderful. \r \r Our current hero is Dr. David Fong who oversees the Holistic Medicine practice at SFVS. Our primary vet recommended that my 12 year old Pug who has arthritis would benefit from acupunture treatments and referred me to SFVS. He had serious joint, nervous system, breathing and arthritis. Thanks to Dr. Fong's treatments of both acupuncture and herbal medicine, Pugs Lee is almost back to his old self. He is a miracle worker and I highly recommend Dr. Fong. \r \r Others may say that it may be a little costly, but to me, it is well worth the high quality of treatment, services and facilities for our little family members. Thanks SFVS and Dr. Fong! Pros: Quality, Service, Ambience, Professionalism, Access more

EXCELLENT EMERGENCY VETS!!! 11/3/2006

SFVS is fantastic! Dr. Watt and staff saved my Frenchbulldog from being permanetly paralyzed. This facillity is large, very clean, modern, highly skilled , and state of the art. The staff was fantastic.\r I was very impressed with their honesty, knowledge, skill, organization, and prompt service. My dog \r had a difficult spinal surgery the day I brought her in and received excellent care throughout her stay. sfvs has a large staff of true animal lovers who are serious about what they do. It was easy to visit my dog during her stay, I recieved prompt updates, and excellent followup instructions in person and in writing (which I found detailed & helpfull once I got home.) My dog and I are gratefull such a facillity is available to the animals of S.F. on a 24/7 basis. more

Extremely warm and professional environment 7/26/2005

We took our cat to SFCS in an emergency last year, and have been going there ever since. The staff is incredible thoughtful and bend over backwards to accomodate owners and their pets. They offer an immense number of services and have a wide variety of staff specialists. These offerings combined with an incredibly clean and soothing environment *almost* remove the trauma of going to the vet. Additionally everything is computerized, so the staff is always well-aprised of the current state of your animal. I can't recommend SFVS highly enough, and wish we'd found it years ago and avoided the stress of the cramped, loud and disorganized vets we'd seen prior. Their location is convenient, and it's fairly easy to park there. Pros: Clean environment, Warm & Friendly, Focus on animals more
