Considering the price vs. the portions and quality of the food, outstanding service shouldn't be an expectation.
The Union Grill thrives because of volume. Its a very hectic environment for a server, especially during the weekends. Also, with both Pitt and CMU down the street there is a large customer base of international students who haven't taken it upon themselves to understand the American culture of tipping servers.
But all in all, due to the large sales volumes, your chances of getting bad service is about the same as any other restaurant.
But this is about the food, right? Well I used to work in their kitchen, and they weigh their burger patties out to >9 oz. to make sure that their burgers are 1/2 lbs. AFTER cooking.
