Stay Far, Far Away from Tropical Salon 3/26/2009

If I could give this salon NO STARS, I would. First, no one called to confirm my appointment. When I called myself - the number rolled over to the owner's cell phone, so there was awful, tacky cha-cha meringue music playing, instead of a proper business greeting. I should have known then to stay far away. Next, when I got to the salon, it was totally empty. Another red flag. Then, when I got into the chair and asked for a Mizani relaxer, I was given a relaxer that was not properly applied, therefore my hair was just as wavy when I left, as it was when I arrived. Also, while I was sitting at the wash basin waiting for my relaxer to be washed out (since the incompetent barely-English-speaking stylist left it on for 55 minutes-15 minutes too long), I was told that the price I was given from Lifebooker didn't include my hair to be blown out after the relaxer. Basically, if I didn't pay FULL price, I would have to leave with wet hair, because he wouldn't be able to blow-dry my hair without me agreeing to pay regular price. So now, I'm upset with Lifebooker - because if the discounted price only included half the service, that should have been clearly expressed, otherwise I would have chosen a different salon. Bottom line, stay far, far away from this place. I think because of the neighborhood they're in, they assume that everyone has money to burn, so they try to trick customers out of every penny, for sub-par services. Save your money and yourself the frustration. I now have to wait 6 weeks to visit another salon to get a real Mizani relaxer. Did I mention he didn't even use the Mizani product! I saw him scoop out the relaxer from another brand's tub. Just gross all around. Cons: Read Below more

feels like home 10/8/2008

I have been to this salon for my hair color and cut the last 4-5 times I needed a change. Some of the staff changes often but the people running the place are the same and are extremely friendly and accomodating (especially Grace). They have recently expanded their services to waxing, mani-pedi, threading, etc. and have completely changed the layout of the salon. I am not the type to do drastic changes in my hair style so I love that they keep track of what products and procedures they do on my hair in order to give me the same great look in following visits. This can also be the place for people who want to ""wowed"" but for that I would recommend Ruben, who has worked at Tropical for a long time. He also knows well how to cut, color and style curly hair.\r \r Tropical is a good neighborhood salon. You will definitely feel at home during your visit and leave feeling great! more

awful haircut 9/2/2008

after getting a haircut here, my hair turned out to be longer in the very front, which was not the look i was going for. it looked ridiculous and i ended up having to go somewhere else. more

HIghly Recommended 2/5/2008

I highly recommended tropical unisex. I was walking around the hood and decided to get a haircut. I when to Carlos who game a Fade and a Shave, the HOt TOWEL was great and very relaxing, I look at it more as a facial the a shave, eventhough it was a very close pain-free shave! Pros: Pizza in the same block! more

If you want to feel great, ask for Mr. Ruben! 10/5/2007

Hola, I'm Gabriella, I'm so happy, that I listened to Grecia the owner of Tropical Salon and finally sat down with Mr. Ruben. He gave me an assesment of what I needed and it was almost as he was reading my mind. We agreed on the highlight colors and on some layers and the end result was fabulous. He was able to blend in the highlights giving it a more natural look. My friends are all thinking of getting a Ruben treatment. Atmosphere is cool and prices are reasonable. Pros: I loved it all, oh yes, I almost forgot, I got a free eyebrow threading! Cons: no cons! more

Jess is a great stylist! 9/6/2007

I've had Jess cut my hair twice so far, and each time I was totally pleased! She pays attention to what you want, yet will make suggestions if you want a change. Going to a new stylist can be anxiety producing, but Jess will make you feel comfortable and you will leave happy!! Pros: Great results, not rushed, pleasant experience. Cons: No complaints! more

Funky hair cuts and great shaves! 7/3/2007

This a casual place. They were very professional and worked very diligently and the end result was ... cool! Yeah, Jess gave me a funky hair cut and Bolivar gave me a great shave and trim of my goatee! more

Jess is the only one who has ever done my hair EXACTLY how i want! 6/20/2007

I'm young and pretty ""hip"" i guess you could say. I was so tired of going to all these prissy salons, where the stylist gives me the same old Jennifer Aniston haircut. I wanted something very young and textured! Something that would make ME stand out from the rest. She got it right INSTANTLY! Not only is she young and friendly, she is very talented. I also told my friend to go to her because my friend dyed her hair at home and had a DISASTER! Jess did MAJOR color correction on her and made her hair PERFECT..this place is the best kept secret in the lower east side...right after i was done i went to the hat to get some margaritas to go! I LOVE IT! Pros: Cool music, friendly people, cozy, not expensive! Cons: i didn't have any problems! more

My wife does her hair here! 6/1/2007

The other day, my wife did some color and stuff and when she came home, I thought I had a new wife, great job. There are three stylists there and two traditional barbers.\r \r My wife's stylist name is Jessica and that she is Aveda trained.\r \r I updated my review, because my wife, had me get a haircut and a shave with one of the barbers. His name is Carlos from Colombia. He took his time and did a very good job, I never had a shave like this before and I liked it. Pros: Cool atmosphere, Village style. Cons: Very busy on friday and saturday more
