Tookies, R.I.P. 2/15/2009

I agree with most all the other reviewers. I ate at the place ever since it first opened. Even after hearing one other story about dirty kitchen practices, I couldn't resist going again for my requisite No.99 and Bombshell. The two very best burger joints I've ever experienced were right here -- Tookies, and the Jalapeno Tree. Sadly, both are now gone. FM146 will be widened one day, and Tookies knew they were going to lose the place, so they decided that all the damage from Hurricane Ike was the excuse waiting to happen. Another one bites the dust. Not as good as it once was 9/30/2008

I used to work at Tookies in high school and the place was awesome! The owners mother worked there making the onion rings in the morning and she ran a very tight ship! The managers also followed in her steps to make sure everything was the best. Over the last several years the place has gone down hill. The atmosphere is still great and awesome, but some of the "fun" of the atmosphere has been taken away. The food is now served on regular plates instead of the western style metal blue plates, real glasses replaced the picante jars for drinks. The onion rings are good, but not as good as they used to be. The service is no longer what it used to be either. BUT I do love the items on the menu. The bombshells are one our favorites, even though extremely over priced! I love the 99 and my husbands gets teh squealer. the kids get different things. They really are one of the best burgers around! We drive from Pearland every so often just to go to Tookies. However, the last several times we've been there I have been extremely disappointed with the service. It takes forever for you to receive anything..service, food, refills, etc... I keep saying I will not go back, but I do love the burgers, and we keep going back. since the hurricane we've found another place to go that is closer to home. But we still will go to Tookies occassionally. Even though the service is not that good (and neither are their tips since I DO tip based on service), the food is good. the prices are also a little extreme. But for some reason we still keep going back. I just hope Tookies recovers from Ike and opens back up. Pros: Fun atmosphere, great food Cons: Prices are too high, service is way below acceptable more

Best Cheeseburger's ever!!!! 9/25/2008

We have been going here every Friday night since I was 8yr old. Now I am 38!! My kids are now hooked on it!! My parents love the Stomps Ice House Special which is a burger with grilled jalepeno's, onions, and Picante sauce (if you like hot this is for you) Sometimes they are not that hot though just depends on the jalepeno's that week! I love the 99 with all the goodies from the Stomps on the top! I call it the Stompin 99!! The 99 has picante, LOTS of Garlic, wine, onions, and cheese in the meat! LOVE IT!!! And you must have the onion rings nobody can come close to these babies!!! WARNING you will stink and burp garlic all day and night and have really stinky breath in the morning!! Some people really like the bean burger and the squealer which has the bacon in the meat (not a fan of bacon) The bean burger has refried beans and picante and fritos on it! YUMMM!! As for the person that said they drop on the ground and still serve it to you, I am sure that happens at more places than you really want to know!!! We just joke and say that's what makes it taste soooo good!! Hope Ike didn't take it away from us!! See ya on a Friday night!!! Pros: Service is ok but we are known there and they already know our order!! AWESOME!! Cons: kinda dirty, bathrooms dirty more

Tookies seems to be the rave in Seabrook; however, I was not at all that impressed;the atmosphere was the best part of the visit. The burgers were okay but be advised that everything is a la carte and drink refills are not free. The onion rings were good, the layout of the place is not great either with a lot of congestion in the front door from people waiting to pay. The employees are not very friendly; I wouldnt recommend this place, there is too much oppurtunity for improvement. My advice spend your money at Fuddruckers...they are head and shoulders above this place. Pros: Nostalgic atmosphere....down home burger Cons: Overpriced...they charge for everything...waitstaff not very friendly...opportunity for improvement more

I ordered a cheeseburger with bacon. I didn't realize the bacon was cut up and put in with the hamburger meat. I had to wonder - was the bacon cooked before they put it in there. The bacon being in the meat made it totally unnoticeable. I actually thought they had brought me the wrong hamburger. When I asked about it, they gave me the answer but with a smirk on their face like - "This is a cool place. What are you doing complaining?" Pros: some of the hamburgers are good Cons: greasy, noisy with kids, slow service, uncomfortable seats more

Hot, Juicy, but a little too greasy 5/22/2008

This burger joint really seems to be a landmark out here in Seabrook, and it definately has its return patrons. I found the burgers to be hot & juicy, but left with a stomach-ache from the over-abundance of grease in the meat. I guess I am more of a flame-grilled burger conniseur, and usually prefer making burgers at home on the grill, when we're in a burger mood. There's another little burger joint close to here, on FM 2094 at Clear Lake Shores Blvd. called South Shore Beer Garden that is better; hot burgers, ice-cold beer, and good prices. Also, T-Bone Toms located just over the Kemah bridge, makes awesome burgers that far surpass Tookies, in my opinion. Look for the Harley bikers parked out front, and you know you've found a good burger or seafood hangout in the Seabrook\Kemah area. Pros: Hot burgers Cons: Too greasy more

I ordered food from Tookie's in Seabrook, Tx and I loved it, I came back a second time for a to go order, I ordered the chili burger....thats the best! Well, I won't go there anymore because I have a friend that works there and this person told me not to ever eat there because cooks have dropped burger patties on the dirty wet mopped floor (the floor was mopped but there was still dirty water puddles and thats where food has landed) well they pick it up off of the floor and still serve it. =( Sorry guys, hope I didn't turn your stomach. I would love to go back myself, but the thought of that possibly happening to me makes me sick....so nevermind. Hope this helps. more

I have to agree with 95% of these reviews, this is one good hamburger, and the onion rings and fries are heavenly as well. I am not totally happy with their beer selection ( I am a bottle baby and all they serve is draft) but it is the coldest draft with the coldest frosty mug I have ever had...... more

A really interesting place and you won't get bored as you are waiting for your food. This is one of the best "mom and pop" places in the Clear Lake area - all kinds of hamburgers to meet your own tastes and the onion rings are awesome. I like the tostados as well. Sure, this isn't a place where you want to be when you are watching your weight, but it would be nice to see a few lower-calorie items on the menu. Pros: Some great-tasting hamburgers! Cons: Having to look around for your seats! more

I had heard Tookie's was the place for burgers in the Kemah/Seabrook area, so I gave it a try and WOW were they right! I had the Bean Burger and it is right up there with Mamma's Cafe in Houston ! The onion rings were golden and crisp and so good that I had to defend them from my buddies eating with me.... Pros: Fresh Onion Rings, Service more

Just like the '80's! 3/27/2005

Used to go to Tookie's ALL the time back in the mid 80's. So happy to see the menu has hardly changed! My 99 was just as I remembered and the onion rings were perfect with their crunchy coating. Service was average and not as friendly as I remember but adequate. Be sure to try the 99 if it's your first visit! Pros: Inexpensive, Good Food Cons: Tables not bussed more

It's small and quaint but the service is good and the burgers are GREAT! The Squealer is my all time favorite with pieces of bacon cooked into the burger where you can't feel the difference in your mouth, but you can taste the flavor. Once you've had a Tookie burger, you'll put it on your top ten list and first in the burger category! Most of the time though, I get one burger and my husband gets another, and we split them because we can't decide what we want.... Pros: Great Burgers & rings, Sell beer, Great service more

What to order 7/12/2003

If you order a "burger", that is what you'll get - but not what you want. I suggest you start with a "99". Back in the '70's, the "99" was "99-cents" but times have changed. The 99 is marinated over night, and spiced to perfection - super tasty and juicy! The 198 is a double-meat 99. If you want REALLY spicey, get the Stomp's Icehouse Special. I've gotten a few "dry" burgers over the years, which happens when they have a new cook - send it back if this happens. Pros: 99, 198 more
