Exceptional Experience 2/22/2009

Hosted a dinner for 26 people last Thursday. Staff was very helpful leading up to event. Chose the Signature menu and various wines. Staff/wine was ready when guests arrived. Service was prompt, attentive, but not intrusive. Food is outstanding. Some of the finest presentation ever. Perfectly prepared and delivered at right temperature and preparation. Price is reasonable for the amount of food provided and quality. Not small plate type experience, but you won't feel like you just ate a 64 oz porterhouse either. Never felt rushed throughout the evening and felt like we were the most important guests in the restaurant. Second time hosting groups but this was largest. Will always return for the experience. Ambience is first class as well! more

Fine Chinese Food 1/17/2009

We went to Tommy Toy's for dinner last night. We all picked the food from the Dine About Town Menu. It's only $35 for 4 courses, but the dessert was not included in this menu. You have to pick it from the regular dessert menu and pay extra for it. However, It's worth trying their dessert selections. We liked the triple chocolate mousse cake and the signature dessert. The ambiance was nice too, actually inside was not as dark as I thought. We'll definately return to this restaurant in the next DAT event because their services and DAT menu were great. Pros: ambiance, services and dessert Cons: can be pricey more

Elegant Chinese dining 12/31/2007

My wife and I (44 and 35) went here for New Year's Eve 2007 and it was very nice. I've lived in the city for 15 years and hadn't been here yet. My wife is from Shanghai and was in the mood for Chinese. The only other Chinese restaurants we could find were the ones that basically throw your plates on the table and walk away. Tommy Toy's is old-school culture and presentation in the sense that it is elegant and the waitstaff are well trained. A very small thing that can indicate the professionalism of a restaurant is what they do with your silverware after each course. Do they replace it or do they take it off your plate put it back on your table for you (presumably assuming you mistakenly left it on your plate). At Tommy Toy's they never made a mistake and the owner walked around thanking everyone for coming. more

Mediocre food, *awful* service 12/26/2007

This is the first time I have ever left a restaurant without leaving ANY tip. Pros: Squab Imperial, Tea smoked Black Cod Cons: Service was awful, restaurant is too dark, did I mention that service was awful? more

Trust the wait staff and sit back and relax. You'll have a great adventure. 4/17/2007

It's been a while since I've been to Toy's and I have to say it was superb tonight. The service was better than A+. The food was perfect. We dined on the wait staff's suggestion of the sampler menu. Everything was perfect. The decor is really nice, the staff amazing and the food delicious. Pros: Best wait staff in the city - wonderful feel - great food Cons: High price but worth every penny to me more

Great, but I'll only eat there once 7/2/2006

The food at Tommy Toy's is to DIE for. I went with my family for a celebratory dinner, and it was a perfect evening of exquisite cuisine in an elegant dining setting. The fixed menu is the best- offering course after course of the finest in Chinese-French fusion. Of course, I'm glad I went with my family so my father paid for the meal (I can't imagine paying for it myself). I'll only go once because it's so very expensive, but once was enough to create a lasting memory of one of the best meals I've ever had. Pros: Excellent food, decor, service Cons: Expensive more

Fancy Presentation and Service for Average Food 6/12/2006

This place is unique - it takes tried and true Chinese classics and puts a fancy presentation spin on them. But quite honestly, I have a problem with paying $10 bucks for 3 pieces for the Spare Ribs appetitizer when I know that I can go up the block and pick up 3 lbs of the same spare ribs for $10 bucks. The service and presentation is good, but not worth that kind of money. Yes, the food was freshly prepared and tasty, but really nothing special. I'm glad that this was a company paid dinner, otherwise I would have been really upset to have paid for this overpriced meal. Pros: Excellent service and ambiance Cons: overpriced and overrated more

SIGNATURE DINNER IS WORTH IT!! 5/18/2006

Forget about the other entrees, order the signature menu--it will take you to a unique, journey of cuisine chinoise! Each dish is presented in style that is very ""French."" The maine Lobster and Peking Duck are the highlights of the signature dinner. Every course of the dinner is well-prepared, delicious, and unforgettable. Chinese food presented at its best! more

Definitely check out this restaurant 1/20/2006

I went there tonight to help celebrate a friend's birthday (1/20/06) - large group. We also took advantage of dine about town. This was the BEST dine about town experience I have had and I have been to many other restaurants. The food, service and ambience were all outstanding. This was my first time at this restaurant after living in S.F. for 20 years. It was a perfect evening in all respects. Pros: food, service, ambience Cons: parking more

Truly Fantastic Food, Service & Ambience 1/14/2006

went to tommy toy's for my birthday with my husband. we arrived 20 mins early for our reservations but were still seated promptly on a relatively busy night. service is AMAZING. earlier in the day, a friend told me the service was great. and i thought ""yeah, ok. great service. whatever."" but now i realize what she meant. this is great service in a way i've never experienced. food was phenomenal. ambience was elegant and romantic. definitely worth the price for a special occasion. Pros: SERVICE, food, ambience Cons: SLOW valet more

Gorgeous atmosphere, horrible food 12/27/2005

We were hosting some out-of-towners, and thankfully, they didn't know what good Chinese food (haute or not) should really taste like. The food was mushy and lukewarm, the hot and sour soup tasted like a bowl of sugar syrup and the ""specialty"" of the house - lobster - was pretty much the worst of the 4 entrees we ordered. The good news is, if you're going ONLY for a beautiful dining atmostphere, great service and top-notch plating/presentation, Tommy Toy's will hit the spot!!! If you have any interest in food that tastes good, however, take your money elsewhere. SF has so many spectacular restaurants... don't waste your time here. Pros: Great Atmosphere, Great Service Cons: Terrible Food more

Outstanding! We will be back. 10/11/2005

Food was excellent, service was impeccable, ambiance and decor was first class. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary here, and were absolutely delighted with everything about our meal. Of all the San Francisco restaurants we have been to, this is one of the best. We had the Signature Dinner and highly recommend it. Pros: Food, Service, Ambiance Cons: nothing more

A worthy splurge. 7/25/2005

Everyone should eat here at least once. The food is delicious (esp. the vanilla prawns, lobster, and seafood bisque), the waiters are attentive, and the atmosphere is intimate & warm. Perfect for a date or just with friends/family. I doubt any other Chinese restaurant in San Francisco can compare to the vibe at Tommy Toy's, unless, of course, eating at noisy tables with flies buzzing overhead is your idea of fine dining... I was warned that this place would be sort of stuffy, but I brought my other trendy 20-something friends along and we all had a good time. Our drinks were good, too. P.S. Just to comment on another earlier comment...they carve only certain parts of the duck because those parts are the best! If you're looking for a buffet (aka large portions), perhaps Sizzler's would be better for you. Pros: service, food, ambiance more

Highly Overrated 5/28/2005

The only good thing I can say is, the soup in a coconut shell was excellent. The rest of the food was what one can get in any decent Chinese restaurant. There were 4 of us and the waiter only carved 1/2 of the duck, we never saw the rest of the duck, maybe they brought it to another table, turned it around and carved the other side for them. One member of our party was still hungry. I would NEVER go to Tommy Toy's again, big deal, you can see pictures of movie stars on the wall, they can afford mediocre, overpriced food. Pros: great soup, good service Cons: Very dark, mediocre food, way overpriced more

Prepare to be blown away 5/17/2004

This is not your typical chinese joint. This is like one of those chinese restaurants that you would see in a bond film. Just a fantastic luxurious place. The food and service are to die for. We had the taster menu which included individual plates of whole duck, lobster and crab. The emphasis here is on Haute cuisine and it is perfectly executed. Great spot for special dinners or if you're in the mood to impress! Pros: Amazing Food, Rich Decor, Outstanding Service more

Dad's Favorite Restaurant 7/25/2003

My folks are from Hong Kong, so maybe we approach Tommy Toy's differently. We celebrated my dad's birthday here, and he STILL raves about the seafood bisque, foie gras, and the attentive service. You simply can't compare this gem to your local Cantonese joint. Tommy Toy's is one of a handful of restaurants serving Chinese haute cuisine in a city that loves its Mongolian beef and lemon chicken. Yes, it's pricey, but the chefs and waitstaff are true craftsmen. Pros: Attentive service, Inexpensive Valet, Decor Cons: Pricey more

Panda Express is Better 7/23/2003

Without any regard to price, the food here is dissapointing. Potstickers were soggy, the vanilla shrimp was worse than 90% of chinese takeout I've eaten. The peach mousse dessert tasted like a jello cup from the supermarket. At least the wine was good... Pros: Atmosphere (dark), Service (prompt) Cons: food, food, food more
