Dark and Seductive 5/18/2009

This is a fantastic place to snuggle up with date, the mood lighting (mostly candle lit) is fantastic for forcing couples to sit closely to see each other and the music is just loud enough to encourage close talking. The selection is fantastic and for the area reasonably priced. The cozy room off the main bar has wonderfully comfortable couches. more

Good place to go with a friend or date 3/14/2009

The beer and wine selection are excellent (specially the beer). The prices are fair and the space is cozy and pleasant. The music is awesome (rock mostly and not all that stupid hip hop). The bartenders have an attitude which strikes me as infantile. But who cares? As long as I get what I want from them and I am able to enjoy the drinks, the music and the conversations with friends, I am ok. more

Very solid bar 11/23/2008

An institution 8/7/2008

I hate to give The Room such a good review because it's a small bar and it already gets crowded, but after the previous post I felt I needed to say something. I've been coming here since 1997 and I've enjoyed every night I've hung out there. I'm not sure what the previous poster is talking about in regards to music, but if they aren't happy with bands like Silversun Pickups, Interpol, Luscious Jackson and Pixies then they're at the wrong bar. It's one of the few bars in the city where I know I'm going to hear great music and maybe even discover a new band. Keep up the good music and of course the nice selection of beer and wine. Cheers! Pros: Good vibe and great music Cons: Small and can get crowded more

Great setting but BAD music! 5/5/2008

I've heard a lot of good things about this place and finally decided to try it out last night. The set-up is very cozy. Unfortunately all of the couches/tables were taken so we were seated on a bench in the back, but it was still pleasant. The low lighting, vanilla aroma from the candles and decor around the lounge was great, perfect for a date. We got a bottle of wine which wasn't too bad, cost about $50. All in all would have been a great place- except the music was horrible! It was like this mix of really bad rock music. I would expect a place like that to have some lounge-y/smooth/seductive tunes on. And if rock is their thing, fine, but Id expect GOOD rock music. It was just really really bad and ruined the whole feel of the place. I hope they don't keep that playlist every night. Pros: Perfect place for a date, really romantic ambiance Cons: Bad Bad Bad music more

Great place to spend a birthday 10/8/2007

The room in South Beach is by far my favorite. Before moving out of NYC, I wanted to try to the room and what a great place it turned out to be for my birthday. Definitely like it more then the miami location. Had a great time! more

Dark and romantic... 1/18/2007

This place is great, with a great dark atmosphere. It's a little small, but very cozy, with lots of candles, and the wine and beer selection is impressive. Don't miss the pear cider when they have it (it's seasonal). The bartenders will hold a conversation with you and are very cool and play equally cool music; I don't know what this reviewer is talking about. Anyway, it's super goth-y, but to me that's a good thing... ;) more

If you are looking to throw back a few rum & cokes (or any spirit for that matter), The Room is not for you. However, you will find a great wine and beer selection and an ambience that shouts lets get a little closer. The Room is a perfect little date spot but small groups of friends have been known to enjoy the experience as well. For a full venue profile, go to NightLifeRatings . com more

Great placeto chill 12/29/2004

A great little bar tucked out of the way, but nonetheless many people still manage to find it. Great selection of beers and wine served in a dark cosy ambience. With an almost painfully hip soundtrack you find an arty SoHo / Eurotrash crowd with the occasional Jersey princess. Only complaint is that the music volume is pumped up on a Friday night making that intimate conversation impossible. Pros: Ambience, Drink Selection more

Just OK 7/13/2004

If the couches are taken and the bar is full you are left with the bar space behind the bar which is very dark and there is not air back there. I ordered a Boddington's beer which MUST be allowed to sit after the draft is pours. The bartender just shoved it at me after pouring it. A waitress came over and picked up my companion's wine glass without asking if you wanted another one or even speaking to us. We concluded they must have been running low on glasses in the back and needed some clean ones.. The wine itself was good. They should serve some finger food. Pros: Nice wine selection, nice beer selection Cons: , bartending more

a perfect start 2/3/2003

The Room provides all you need to successfully get started with your date. It's like being at a party with a bunch of friends. You'll be served promptly, nobody will disturb your activities afterwards. The lights are bright enough to recognize your date and dark enough to not feeling intimidated. The music's like a perfect mixture of your personal CD collection. In one sentence: It worked out! Pros: intimate, not too crowded, very comfortable more

Great- except literally "a room" 7/23/2002

The room is a great little place if you're looking to relax with a good beer. It's dark and intimate, yet also very small and could get way too crowded on weekends. Go on a weekday. Pros: atmosphere Cons: too small more

  • Exposed brick walls and comfy couches enhance the mellow, intimate ambience at this neighborhood favorite. The bar runs along one narrow room, with a larger area next door to accommodate larger groups. While they don't stock spirits, the wine list is good and the beer selection is even better (with more than 50 varieties by the bottle), running the gamut from standard selections (Stella) to more unusual choices like Rogue Dead Guy.

Hits: It's one of Soho's more convivial, friendly bars, and if a night of low-key fun is what you're looking for, it's a sure thing any night of the week.

Misses: The usual Soho mix of Euros and uptowners are in attendance, but they're in relaxation rather than strike-a-pose mode, causing their accents to sound more endearing than affected.
