The museum is great and has an amazing collection but its not the best art museum in the city. Its way too big and crowded. Good luck finding your way around, the maps don't even ...

It's huge. 8/21/2005

Gigantic. This is a big museum. I say this because you can't do it all in one day. Make a plan, pick a wing, choose some art. Go find it, enjoy, relax. Maybe hit the cafeteria (which I don't really recommend unless you've spent too much time in the museum already and are ready to faint from exhaustion). Buy a membership to this museum and visit it again and again, an amazing museum well worth the visit. I repeat the best advice I can give is choose the art you want to enjoy because after the first 3 hours you won't be enjoying anything but aching feet and dry mouth. more

anything else 8/21/2005

I've been to the Metropolitan Musem of Art quite a few times.. each time for free. I could never bring myself to pay to go to this place. It's highly overrated and they don't even possess any of the world's coolest or unique pieces of art. Save your money and go to the Guggenheim or leave the area for once and go to a real art museum. If you must go, go on a Friday afternoon after 4pm when it's free but beware of the lines to get in! more

beautiful building, beautiful art 8/21/2005

What a wonderful place to spend an afternoon! Located on millionaire's mile, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a beautiful building housing beautitful art. The permanent collection is one of the best in the city ranging from renaissance to modern to impressionist to cubist. There are so many floors and rooms to discover, one can't do it in a day. Every time I visit the Met, I discover something new. The best time to visit is during the summer when you can have a drink upstairs on the roof, enjoy a great view of central park and drink to the stars. Lovely, indeed; a true NY institution and moment. Must visit for anyone. more

The one and only 8/19/2005

Not quite the biggest art museum in the world anymore, the Met still holds so many riches that it is not only impossible to see them all in one day, you should not even attempt to see it all in a week. The Met is best experienced piecemeal, department by department, and with a clear plan going in of what you want to see. The selection is overwhelming and that makes it imperative to know exactly what you want to do. This advice might seem impractical to the casual tourist, who is only in town for a short time, but they might take note of the fact that as far as art goes, it is better to enjoy fewer things fully, than to rush through many just to say "I did it". more

A grand art museum 8/19/2005

The MET is in my opinion the best art museum in the world. You can find works from all eras and all types here. I remember my first visit like it was yesterday. I had to pick out one painting and write a 2 page essay of my opinion of it. I spent hours just walking around the museum admiring not the paintings but the museum itself. I was astonished by the sheer size of this place, it was unbelievable. It was like a work of art in itself. If you’re an art enthusiast you’ll surly enjoy yourself here, if you’re not, I guarantee you’ll at least come away with a better appreciation of it. Here is a tip. The MET does not charge admission, however, they accept donation. There’s a sign above the cashier that nobody seems to read that says, “Suggested donation” You can donate any amount you wish and be granted admission. However, just don’t be a cheap skate. more

All the world under one roof 8/19/2005

One of the best museums in the world, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is best visited when you have time to lose yourself. Don't go with a preconceived agenda (and try not to go when there's a "blockbuster" show). Climb the steps at 82nd and Fifth, get your bags inspected - it's inevitable these days - and check you coat. Then pay your admission (the sign says that the suggested entry fee is $15 but the operative word here is suggested. Don't feel guilty if you pay less.) and enter. Chose a direction and just amble through the place at your own pace. Stop when something strikes your fancy. Medieval sculpture? Early Romanesque painting? Japanese scrolls? Egyptian sarcophagi? This is a museum that truly can be all things to all people. Don't say you know nothing about art - surely you know what you like. Find things you like. Enjoy them That's what they're there for. more

The best art museum in the country! 8/19/2005

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is quite simply the best art museum in the country. The variety of the exhibits, the sheer number of works...it is breathtaking. I have been there three times now and still have not managed to make it through the entire place. The Egyptian exhibits and the Impressionist paintings are by far my favorites, but nearly everything they have is wonderful! more

The Standard for Museums 8/18/2005

This museum has yet to be disappointing the multiple times that I have gone to visit. The vast wings and impeccable curating have made the museum a must for any New Yorker and of course, any eager tourist. The exhibits are constantly changing, but the permanent collection is just as impressive. Make a weekend day out of the visit and you will not be disappointed with what you find. more

it's ...a new experience each time you visit 8/17/2005

If you're reading this and are thinking about going...go! It is one of those places where the moment you step into its majestic grandeur and the sounds of footsteps resonating through the halls will affect you. Everything else is icing...you have numerous exhibitions to gawk at, from Mondrian to Van Gogh, to the Egyptian pyramid collection, places to sit and reflect, and a cafe with yummy snacks. The experience will encompass much more than just the sights. more

A work of art itself. 8/16/2005

With each visit my appreciation of the Met grows. It amazes me as to how well they have preserved the various artifacts. The Temple of Dendur is very beautiful and thought provoking. I admire how much effort the curators have put in over the years to protect works of art. The only disappointing thing is the weather damaged obelisk behind the building. more

Awe inspiring 8/16/2005

From the moment you enter, you are surrounded by our history. There is so much to see here, it's virtually impossible to see it and appreciate it all in a single day, so go often, heck revisit your favourite sections time and again. The atmosphere is very peaceful and it's a great way to spend a day in New York City. In fact I'd say this is a must see. more

just go and go often 8/16/2005

I love the Met. What New Yorker doesn’t? What tourist wouldn’t? It is quite simply one of the best museums in the world. And it doesn’t cost anything, although I’m a big supporter of paying when you can. I’ve been going regularly since I first started at NYU and honestly feel like some of the rooms are home. I've been dozens of times and always see something new and have never managed to go to every room. My favorites: the arms & armory, the costume exhibit, the temple and the impressionists. more

Museum for everyone 8/16/2005

Whether it is a place to see a great collection, or a desire to find a peaceful part of New York, the Met has something for everyone. Their permanent collection has wonderful rooms of medieval art, great impressionist paintings and some of the most tranquil settings that you can find in New York. The special exhibits are truly special and worth the time in line (when there is one.) And if Egyptian artifacts are your thing, take a trip through this section to see a wonderful collection. more

Free admission 8/15/2005

This museum is donate based. They have a suggested price but you do not have to give them anything. In fact, I suggest you do not give them any money at all. A professor of mine who worked at many museums told me that museums are rich. They receive tons of private donations, they don't have to pay taxes, and the admission fee is just another way to earn some pocket change for them. Anyway, this is an interesting museum. They have many sections of art to suit your needs. Some exhibits are more detailed than others, but they are all great. You'll learn a lot just by visiting this museum. The art has extensive history behind them, it's such a great learning experience. more

The best museum and it's free! 8/9/2005

The Metropolitan Museum Of Art is just great for all ages. It’s free admissions, although donations are accepted. After getting a pin to get in, you can walk around the biggest museum in the area. The MET has events going on all the time, from student programs to special exhibitions. Cameras are allowed in most part of the museum so make sure to bring them and make lots of memories! more

Plainly amazing 8/4/2005

This museum more than any other art museum, has it all. It has the most ancient art from Mesopotamia to modernist white dots on a black canvas. My personal favorite parts are the ancient art, they even imported an Egyptian temple. Also, it is also a pseudo history museum, each part of the ancient temples come with a detailed explanation. In the museum there is plenty of sitting area where you can just sit and stare at the sculptures or paintings. Best of all admission is free (though a donation is encouraged) so students go for free and remember the museum when you are a rich philanthropist! more

Excellent art museum, many different collections 8/3/2005

Arms and armor as well as the Egyptian wing are good for children. There are also several different free booklets for kids where they can search through the exhibits - ask at the information counter. A little stuffy - there is a giant sarcophagus and you get scolded if you touch it. Besides paintings, there is the popular costume exhibit, religous icons, eastern arts and the American wing. Nice garden. Steps outside are a great place to people watch and see the mime. Suggested admission is $12!!! but you can get in for $1 and save your money for souvenirs in the gift shop. There is also a separate children's gift shop which has some neat stuff for kids. more
