Can't wait to try this place more

mmmm.... delicious 6/5/2010

So grateful there wasn't a dress code... my boyfriend was wearing a white Under Armour workout shirt that I quickly dubbed the nipple shirt. No pretense here! This is definitely not a fast food restaurant, which I get enough of during the work week. We came here on a Saturday, with no where to be, nothing to do. We enjoyed our wine while we waited for our food. It was decadent, actually, to not feel as though you're in a hurry to eat. The food came out and the gates of heaven opened. I feel as though I met someone that spoke my food language- cheese should ALWAYS come with the bread!!! The Cheese and Onion soup wasn't a beef bouillon concoction- it actually tasted like cheese and onion... Imagine that! It was actually perfect. Up until now my perfect Onion Soup had been awarded to Claddagh in Novi (they've been usurped, I'm sorry to say). Anyhow, our meals came out and they were delicious. I would recommend the snapper to anyone... it really is OMG good. My biggest regret is that I didn't leave room for the profiteroles. Two thumbs up!!! Pros: delicious food, relaxed atmosphere, great service Cons: not for the dieting! more

Best Place Around 7/26/2009

Wonderful french food with the French/European Dining experience. Expect to be there for a few hours as good food and service takes time and enjoy fresh roasted coffee as you wait. Pros: Good Food, Enjoyable Relaxing Experience Cons: Can be a bit expensive but it is MORE than worth it more

Good Brunch 6/22/2009

Defintiely an air of elitism, however, the food is delicious. I would reccommend it for breakfast or brunch, just don't wear a ball cap or have something to do for the next 90 minutes. Sit back and savor the food, bread and coffee. more

Good food, too bad about the owner 9/7/2008

My wife and I went to the French Gourmet for a few years for the occaisional decanent butter-drenched multi-course meal. The coffee is as good as people say, being fresh roasted on the premises, and a well tended and skillfully operated espresso machine to it's credit. If you have an open schedule, a generous wallet and ability to suspend judgement on the decor which staggers between the baroque and cheesy, you are in for a treat. As they say, the 3 secrets of french cuisine are butter, butter and butter.\r \r One day, I thought I'd swing by for lunch, and I was refused service. I was seated at the second occupied table, all others being empty at the time. When I placed my order for a small item and a cup of espresso I was informed in no uncertain terms that the establishment was a ""sit-down, have a meal"" sort of place and not the place for a quick bite and cup of coffee. I was further encouraged to take my business down the road to the Coffee Beanery, that he was sure they could meet my expectations. I was more than surprised, the owner is a pudgy, fey man who ordinarily prances and unctuously dotes on the customers. Evidently, the owner maintains strict standards on what circumstances he will serve his customers, and I choose not to be one of them. Pros: Good Food Cons: Arrogant owner, expensive more

Sadly discriminatory and arrogant. 4/11/2008

Sadly, although it positions itself as high-end, in reality it's low, and I cannot recommend this restaurant. \r \r First, a visit for lunch with a male friend resulted in lackluster and profoundly slow service, less-than-ordinary tasting food -- and a bad feeling for the spirit. Far worse was the attempt to accompany a female friend for a Sunday-morning breakfast. I don't eat breakfast, and while she ordered a lavish omelette, I was quite happy with a cafe au lait and a good croissant. Incredibly, the man who I believe is (or was) the owner completely refused to serve me, saying ""We don't want to be known as some little cafe for a coffee and something small."" (My responses -- that I certainly wouldn't tell anyone about my small order, and that my companion was ordering a prodigious meal -- fell on deaf ears.)\r \r We ended up leaving, angry and dissatisfied. And although other friends have suggested going there -- it's just around the corner from our homes -- when I relate this story, I always manage to convince them to go elsewhere. I hope you do, too. One simply cannot condone that degree of arrogance and discrimination. Pros: Interesting turquoise exterior. Cons: Horrible service, disgusting treatment. more

Almost as good as... well, you know 3/5/2008

They've added wine and champagne to their offerings. Went for a birthday dinner with friends and had one of my most enjoyable dining experiences I've ever had. Every course was perfectly presented and tasted delicious. It's a rare treat when the flavors, aromas, and atmosphere make for an almost spiritual experience. A co-worker went recently on my recommendation and had a similarly good review. His girlfriend has some food limitations but the menu at Frend Gourmet provided her ample options. Good idea to make reservations, especially for larger parties. Pros: Has its own parking lot Cons: Go when you have time to relax more

Love this place for brunch, not for dinner... 3/31/2006

I went to the French Gourmet for brunch on Sunday and loved it and would do that again. However, I went for dinner and thought the food was horrible, and they way over charged for it. I was so dissappointed because I had such high hopes. But like I said I would do brunch again. They also do serve booze now (wine, champagne) The service was outstanding, and the ambience is wonderful. Pros: Sunday Brunch, Amosphere, Service Cons: Price, Dinner was not good more

Chic Dining In A Friendly Atmosphere 2/4/2003

The courteous staff and pleasant decor made dining a happy and upbeat experience. As far as salad is concerned, I believe that's a matter of personal taste, I found it delicious. The chef offers an excellent choice of menu. After dinner, I suggest creme brule and fresh gourmet coffee. I haven't found another restaurant that has swayed my dessert appeal. It compliments the romantic and it accompanies those who desire extra guests at their table. Hats off to French Gourmet! Pros: Romantic, Intimate, Cozy more
