Best

I want to work to this place which will make life happening.

Worst

This bar is okay, theres nothing specifically special about it, but the waitress we had was horrible. She wasn't happy with her tips, and didnt understand that to have good tips ...

lovely place 7/16/2009

i went there for my friend's party. It turned out to be a really nice one. I enjoyed theri martinis and other drinks. I will def go back there. more

Great Place for our Party 5/15/2009

I've had two parties at this place. One birthday, and one small reunion. The manager Gypsee was super prompt returning all my emails and taking care of every detail. When we arrived everything was just as promised. Three rooms, and tons of drink concoctions. I really like this place. Pros: Great Service and Drinks Cons: Small bathroom more

Very Friendly Place With Something For Everyone 5/15/2009

This is one of my favorite places because there is so much you can do. Upstairs they have two rooms - one like an old style bar, and the other a Moroccan lounge. Downstairs they have dancing and sometimes live music. It seems to be a popular choice for groups because there is plenty of seating, there are couches, and the booths have high backs giving some privacy. Pros: various atmospheres Cons: music a bit too loud in the back room. more

you got me hooked...love the homemade vodkas 4/20/2009

I was there last Wednesday for Karaoke for my friends birthday. We had a blast singing Karaoke in the lounge. We had the best homemade infused vokas..YUMMY..the pineapple and the verry berry were delicious. also had the beef sliders, veggie skewers and homemade potatoe chips all delicious. Very surprised to find good food in a bar. Just when we were tired of singing went down to the Village Underground and enjoyed the live music, amazing singers. Loved the old school reggae and disco that the girls sang. also loved how the band mixed the old and the new, mixed rock with the hip-hop. the band was having so much fun on stage that we stayed the entire night - didnt want to miss a thing. This place is a jem. Looking forward to going back soon Pros: food, drinks, karaoke. live music downstairs more

Can't stay away 4/20/2009

I love this place...I think my fav about it is the Karaoke! It's so much fun! I go all the time! But the thing is they also have other stuff there too! So if there are to many people signing you can play pool or go down stairs and listen to the professionals sign. Pros: yummy eats and yummy drinks Cons: nothing more

Best Sound in the City 3/16/2009

The Underground has absolutely the best sound in the city for such an intimate setting. Only other contender would be The Wha? Formerly of the same ownership. The drinks are nicely sized and tastey. The waitstaff is customer friendly, although it is possible to get lost in the shuffle on busy nights. The bouncers keep it orderly. I was seated next to regular customers of the Blue Note last Friday, it was their first time coming to the VU. The UnionN was on stage. They said they they had never experienced anything like the VU, and were sure to come back. Overall, any quest for excellent live music should start here. You might make it a permanent home. Pros: Best sound, great drinks, friendly staff Cons: Food is so-so more

Good Happy Hour Spot, IF... 3/8/2009

FBPC has yummy happy hour specials including a wide variety of martinis and shots. The place is filled with old couches and chairs and has a vintage smell, but the younger crowd doesn't seems to think about or care about what the place would look like "with the lights on..." Recommended for newcomers to NYC and to all in the winter when it doesn't matter that you're entering a dungeon during daylight hours. more

Huge Shotss 3/1/2009

We went here not really knowing what to expect... we ordered soco n lime shots... HUGE shots for only $8... awesome deal and fun times ... would deff go here again... more

the best place in the village! 2/24/2009

I have to say I really luv this place! Really really really! On the weekends this place is hopping with different DJs and lots of people...and now they do KARAOKE 3 days a week! I love it! I really don't have to go to any other bar and then if I get tired of singing I go downstairs to hear the bands that play! I really love this place! Pros: karaoke and fun more

five stars 2/24/2009

I celebrated my 30th here and I have to say that the other 29 sucked compared to this night! I had 0 problems here. Not like some other places I don't want to mention! I just have to say Thank you to the party Coordinator Gypsee...SHE IS THE BEST! And I didn't have to worry about any of my friends having a good time because the guys could play pool upstairs while us ladies danced the night away downstairs! I will def be back! Thanks Gypsee! Pros: everything Cons: nothing more

Average 2/20/2009

Customer service is number one in any business for benificial reasons(word of mouth promo ect. by customers). At the this establishment it varied. The guy behind the bar was pretty courteous while the young lady was rude and impatient. She had an expression on her face as if I was burden or something. One of the waitresses misplaced my credit card and doubted that she had it until she double check and found it (spend 15 minutues argruing with her). Nice place and setting. Was here on Valentines day of this year for the first time. I can't really pass judgement based on one trip. But I will go back. The music was okay but nothing special compared to another establishment I visited before. Maybe I went on the wrong night. The drinks were top notch and strong!!! One of the best places to drink. I was at both at the Village Underground and Fat Black P Cat and since they are sister establishments I rated them both together. Village Underground was okay (average customer serivce) Fat Black P*Cat was tremendous more

You'll be coming back for more! 12/31/2008

This was a GREAT bar. It had so many rooms and atmospheres to fit all your moods. Though the bartender at the front when you walk in was really slow and really not personable. You over look that once you enter all these amazing rooms decorated to the tee. Great lighting and drinks were at a moderate price. Its close to the subway and West 4th, so you can easily get a cab. Pros: great decor, close to subway, great lighting, strong drinks Cons: slow staff more

Great for a party...... 12/7/2008

I've partied at fat black a couple of times, the first time i had a private party for my girl at the morraccan room and recently organize a small private party for my cousin. Gypsee is on point, fast response and come over personally to make sure everything is ok. The Drinks were great, and we all had a great time. The atmosphere is great and i had a memorable time. Hightly reccommended Pros: Drinks are on point, Atmosphere is great, Service was great more

Had a great time 12/7/2008

I came with a group of 8 people last week. We had a fantastic time. Martinis were huge and delicious. Service was great. and the DJ downstairs couldn't have been better. The decor in the velvety room was really beautiful. I don't thnk we could have chosen a better place. Pros: Velvet lounge, DJ Cons: upstairs bathroom needs a reno more

Good, but used to be better 12/4/2008

A 3-1 type of place. When you enter its a sports/dive bar, walk further its a lounge, go downstairs and it has more of a club atmosphere. They have half price drinks for hour on Wednesdays (or at least they used to). It's still a decent place to hang out other than on weekend nights, where the place develops more of an attitude. The place has become a little snootier in the past few years, but not bad compared to some of the other places in the city. Plus it's the only place I know in NY I can get Tusker beer. A big plus in my book. more

Definitely Worth Checking Out 12/1/2008

I had a party on Nov. 29th. The coordinator did everything possible to accomodate my needs. The bouncers at the door were all very friendly. The only annoying thing is the minimum amount per person if you have a guest list. It's $25 a person that needs to be spent in order to have a table/guest list. This gets really annoying because it generally means you will get screwed by your friends that are cheap and don't pay up at the end of the night. Once you get the minimum you can close out the tab. It's probably a lot easier to just pay the $10 cover because you'll find a place to pop a squat. There is seating everywhere. That being said we came up short of the minimum because everyone in my party kept going to the bar to order drinks the whole night. The waitress let us off the hook for the small difference which was nice. Aside from that the DJ was pretty good; spinning a good mix. The crowd was very mixed as well. Decent ratio of guys to girls. The whole set up with the dance floor and bar in the village underground was sweet. If you don't want that whole scene you can just go upstairs to the lounge area, and chill. Best of both worlds to accomodate your friends. Ben's pizza next door is amazing by the way, and the perfect way to end a really drunk night. All in all definitely a fun spot. I would come back. Pros: set up, friendly bouncers, employees, decent crowd Cons: waitress had a little trouble getting the drinks out which caused my friends to go to the bar (we had over 20 people in our party), annoying drink minimum for parties more

Lots of people to meet, alot of different intersting things going down, good music, girls, drinks 10/26/2008

celebrated my b-day with a ton of friends here a couple years ago, had an awesome time. THey had a huge selection of beer. The bartenders werent retarted when it came to making different types of drinks, there was decent service, I could actually make it to the edge of the bar and order after midnight! The bartender even hooked me up with some free shots because it was my b-day, really chill place. Pros: lots of different people, great place to hang out, fun, drinks, girls! Cons: gets kind of messy and crowded like every other decent bar in nyc on the weekend more

Awesome place for a B-day Party! 10/5/2008

I had my 25th bday party at the FBPC in late Sept and I had a blast! PROs: The Moroccan lounge was roomy enough and gorgeous, making it the perfect place for a large group to hang out. The drinks were great too! The waitress was super friendly and made great and honest suggestions about the drinks too. I usually choose places like this since they are not pretentious and overpriced and you get treated with respect as they realize how important good word of mouth is along with return patrons. CON: the bathrooms! Its the only thing i can think of. They were tiny and as the line to the ladies room is always long and is right next to the pool tables, you have to avoid getting poked with a pool stick while in line. more

Excellent service, NY bar with no NY attitude 9/14/2008

I planned a bachelorette party here in June and the service was fantastic. The party organizer, Gypsee, was very accomodating and incredibly responsive. The music was perfect - good mix of pop/hip hop/dance/old school throughout the night. We were at the downstairs dance club all night. I don't think I sat once. We had plenty of room to spread out in the reserved area. The best part was the price. I researched many of the"hot spots" but quickly learned of $1000/bottle minimums and read reviews about the rude service. At FBP, there was no bottle service required so we could all drink what we want and pay a fair price. Our waitress was attentive. The night could not have been better. more

Any place that shows Kurosawa is cool by me. 8/31/2008

Came here by accidnet. After striking out at a few place, I found the needle in the haystack. Great drinks, friendly staff, nice atmosphere and really cool Kurosawa movie playing on the TV (and Pros: really nice lounge area in th eback Cons: small bathrooms more

Editorial
  • The Scene On the surface, this bar appears to be just another noisy, crowded after-work or after-school scene. But move beyond the cramped front room and find a casual crowd unwinding in a lively space with wooden booths, quirky wall art and mini table-side TVs. For the real surprise, slip behind a side curtain into a lavish bohemian lounge where would-be couples sink into inviting velvet couches amid Moroccan lanterns. The Draw Plasma TVs, dartboards, Web-access terminals, a jukebox, a pool table--there are enough diversions to occupy even the shortest attention span. The drink selections--beer, cognac, martinis--suit a variety of tastes, and raspberry liqueurs give the bar's namesake drink an appropriately robust flavor. While more obvious choices exist for meeting people and kicking back (or making out), this split-personality feline is ideal for those who want to keep their options open.
