Taking a ride on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is a bit like a trip back in time. The narrow gauge railroad winds through the lower Rocky mountains of northern New Mexico and lower Colorado while you sit either indoors or out in the open air car. The train stops part way through the trip for lunch at a building set up in a cafeteria style with wonderful views. The food is good and there is enough time left over to browse the gift shop or wander outside. You board again to finish the trip. By the end of the trip, the last thing you want to do is take a bus ride back because of the long day, but unless you stayed in the town, you bus back. Beautiful trip, but after the long day, the end is welcome.
