For a good time.... the Academy 5/16/2006

This theater rocks!!! The theater is beautiful, parking easy, seats comfortable, food selection terrific, pizza great, beer.... hey it's great beer but best of all my kids had a great time in the day care. The care provider was A #1 and they can be picky. Over all we had a great time and will be going back soon and often. Thanks! Pros: Child care, Food, Bevs more

I love it that I could see "3 Burials of Melquiades Estrada" and "Failure to Launch" at the same theater, with GREAT SOUND! Finally! Pros: good beer, good pizza, good movie selection more

Awesome Experience 5/16/2006

What a great concept - and equally great theatre. I felt like I was stepping back into the heyday of theatre. From the curbside ticket window, to the beautiful marquis, to the lavish yet relaxed atmosphere inside - I was in consumer bliss. I enjoyed the beer too! more

The new Academy Theater/Theatre 5/16/2006

What a treat! My husband and I were able to enjoy such a great night "alone" enjoying a GREAT movie, pizza and a nice glass of wine while our children (3!) were in the babysitting area having a great time. We all went home after enjoying such a nice time and definately plan to be back. I told my brother about the theatre and he and his crew of friends were really impressed. A great place for everyone! Keep up the good work! A place well needed! more

A dream come true if you have small children! 5/16/2006

I have a three year old, so I haven't been to the movies in, oh... about three years! Who can afford to go? A babysitter sets you back ten bucks an hour and tickets are close to $10 apiece. By the time you figure in drive-time, you've spent $50 and haven't even ordered a soda yet! But the Academy has on-site babysitting that's only $5 per child! They also have pizza, beer and wine and their prices (tickets and concessions) are totally reasonable. Not only that, but the interior is really lovely - there's nothing else like it in Portland (that I've seen anyway!) Check out The Academy Theater - you won't be disappointed! Pros: inexpensive, kid-friendly, beer and wine Cons: none more

Unique without breaking the bank! 5/16/2006

Very cool atmosphere! It's so wonderful that finally a business takes to heart "family friendly" - providing babysitting, reasonable ticket prices, comfortable seats (especially nice for my grandmotherly body!), movies kids dig, as well as movies for more mature audiences without all the sound-effects of restless kiddos. The best pizza and a beer just top off the experience. Can't wait to try out the kids birthday party! One place that truly is family friendly without simply catering to children alone. Great new theater 5/16/2006

It is so wonderful to see the rebirth of the Academy Theater, a classic art deco venue located at the foot of Mt. Tabor, as a pizza, beer & a affordable movie joint, one especially convenient for those who live in outer portion of inner SE/NE. The theater has been completely renovated and quite frankly blew my socks off. You owe it to yourself to settle in with a cold one and catch a flick here! Movies, Microbrews and Day care... that's a winning combo for this dad. I really like the atmosphere of the refurbished theater and the comfortable seating. Plus, I am able to see previews of all their moview on their weekly podcast. more

I went to this theater expecting another run-of-the-mill theater pub and holy cow was I surprised! This place is schwanky! And it's only $3 for adults. But the biggest surprise was that they have babysitting. Great idea! Pros: new, clean, price, babysitting more

Happy to go out! 5/12/2006

Ever been a young mom and want to get out but can't afford or find a sitter? I have been to the theater three times already. It's so nice inside, and it's cheap. For less than $20 I got the daycare, my ticket, a pint of beer and a slice of pizza. The seats are super comfortable (they rock) and the ticket/concession guy and girl were real friendly.   • Originally launched in 1948, the Academy Theater was a popular Montavilla destination until its closure in the 1970s. Over the following years, it fell into disrepair, but a full-scale $1m renovation was completed in 2006, including careful restoration of the glittering rounded lobby with its soaring, metallic two-story dome. Great attention was paid to every detail of the project. Using vintage photos from the original opening night, even the theater's signature marquee has been recreated to imbue the building with authentic 1940s charm.

    They also have babysitting for children 6mos to 7yrs! Call ahead and reserve.
