Great find & Best Eats in State College 2/16/2009

August of 2006 was our first encounter with "The Tavern," and we were hooked, this was a send off meal for our PSU freshman(with discriminating taste) and the age old question of where to eat, in an area of unknown eateries, all we were looking for was good food at a fair price, and boy oh boy, what a lucky find. We loved-and still LOVE the food, service,(Yo,Eric), atmosphere, and value, always fresh, exciting and delicious meals. I feel like I'm home, so relaxing and comfortable. I alway must start with the delectable escargot in mmmm garlic butter, then the best ever spinach salad, plus all the other tasty sides they offer that evening, even the simple but excellent, crisp french fries. The waldorf salad is unique and oh so good because (Thank You) Chef does not use mayo, but, get to Tavern early because this side runs out fast. I have yet to meet a side I didn't like. Entree time, depending on what day the Chef creates a seafood lasagna that's out of this world, so many other favorite creations made with veal, beef, lamb, or, chicken, whatever your in the mood for and men the steak is spot on, oh, stop me now, I'm drooling. You can't go wrong, there is something to please everyone. Desserts, if you have room are luscious. Everyday the menu changes and is posted out front by the Apple sign on College Ave. to wet your appetite. I alway enjoy my 3 hour drive to pick up or drop off Drew to State 'cause I know my reward is a Tavern dinner with him...always consistently palate pleasing and Fab-U-Lous. Enjoy and Thanks much to everyone at the Tav for the great eats especially Pat. Salivating till my next meal with ya'll...See ya soon. Hugs, Judy A. more

I alway must start with the escargot, then spinach salad, I let my son pick my entree because he'll take my leftovers to his dorm and it's just too hard for me to choose which yum-o one to try. Good food and a very nice atmosphere 4/14/2006

The menu changes all the time, but I have always been impressed with the food at The Tavern. My favorite so far has been the duck, but nothing has ever been "bad" or even mediocre. My favorite thing about The Tavern (besides its central location and that cute little pig statue) is the really interesting art that they have hanging on the walls. Look for the painting depicting the Johnstown Flood if you go. more

You Can Do Better 12/20/2005

I've lived in State College for 20 years and have gone to The Tavern on and off throughout this time. There are several things that have remained the same: terrible service, uninteresting main dishes and a very static menu. The Tavern's gimmick is that you can choose as many side dishes as you want - so what! When they aren't that tasty, why would youI want to choose 2, 5 or 10?? Don't let the "Penn State Tradition" suck you in. You can do better! more

Unlimited side dishes + great atmopshere = great night out 7/27/2005

The Tavern has a great cental location (right next to Calder Way and the bronze pig statue) and the best selling point for this local restaurant is that you get nlimited side dishes with any entree. Of course, some of those side dishes are things like cottage cheese or applesauce, but hey, unlimited is unlimited! The entrees are mid-priced and very tasty, and it's fun picking out a few sides. This old building is truley a landmark in State College, and not only is the food good and plenitful, but if you sneak to the back to the Adam's Apple, you can have a famous "Original Sin" drink at the bar back there (just make sure someone else is driving home!) more
