Excellent Food and Prompt, Friendly Service 10/20/2010

This long standing restaurant doesn't disappoint. I've been here many times over about 12 years each time has been great. The Vietnamese spring rolls were outrageously good and the owner even taught us how to eat them properly. The pad thai was excellent, and the coconut ice cream was a near religious experience. If you are around NW 23rd Ave a stop here will not disappoint! more

surprisingly bad food and service 3/26/2009

We were charmed by the location and wonderful patio dining. The bejewelled owner (assumed) helped our teenager decide on chicken kabobs. They were overcooked, tough, jerky-like pressed meat. Awful. To the point of poisoned. I politely notified her of the ""mishap"" thinking she would offer another dish or remove from the bill. Boy was I mistaken. She stood by the kabobs, tasted it from our dish and stated that is how they are supposed to be. So much for pleasing the customer! Pros: wonderful patio Cons: reputation does not override quality and good service more

WOW - Great Food, Great Outdoor Seating, Great Service, Great Price 7/22/2008

Had to do a dine and dash on my way to the airport on a Sunday evening and this was perfect. The food was great (Love the yellow Curry). The location is easy, the outdoor dinning is charming, the service was quick and solid and the Rice came in a pretty pueter serving dish. Love this place! Pros: Value, Rice Service Bowl, Outdoor Dinning, Food Cons: Can't think of one more

Exellent food and service in a family-run business 8/25/2007

Despite this listing, Tara Thai Northwest specializes in Lao food as well. more

Knock your socks off meals! 2/12/2007

Every person that visits us in the non-rainy months gets a meal at Tara Thai. The food is exemplary, the service is top notch and the outdoor dining under the giant tree is what outdoor dining is supposed to be. We have become true Thai / Laotian lovers since our first visit two years ago and will always use Tara Thai as our reference point. Try the Larb, one of our favorites for a spicy chicken treat. Pros: Outdoor dining, Quality ingredients, Fast and Friendly service. You must sit outdoors. Cons: None. more

Just okay 8/16/2006

Went for lunch today with coworkers and ordered Pad Ga Prau - a dish I've enjoyed at many other Thai places around Portland. This one was the worst version I've ever had - the chicken was on the rubbery side, the sauce lacked flavor, and the brown rice (which I paid $1 extra for) was mushy and sticky. Plus, the portion was quite small for an $8.50 lunch. The thing is, my husband and I went here for dinner several years ago and never went back because we felt the food was only average-tasting and not a good value - I was open to giving them a chance but I see things haven't changed. Pros: Nice patio Cons: Everything else more

it's a shame this place isn't better 9/12/2005

it's got such a beatiful tree on the patio... i've really tried to like this place because it's near my house and i love the tree. but it's just bad. the prices are slightly higher than other thai places and the food is below average. i ordered pad thai once that was almost $10 and was a bunch of dry noodles stuck together. everything i've had there has been bland. Pros: the tree Cons: the bland food more

so-so everything 5/25/2004

Tara Thai is merely okay on almost all counts. For Thai and Lao cuisine, their food is surprisingly timid. Dishes that should have bold, booming flavor -- like pad ga prow, pad kee mao, curries, etc. -- taste okay, but certainly don't have the complexity, depth or pizzazz that I expect. Service was fine, the location is nice (a converted victorian) and the prices seem fair, but with so many great Thai places in town to choose from, why go to Tara Thai? Pros: good location more

Excellent Food & Service 7/24/2003

This is a 'down-to-earth' family run Thai/Laos Restuarant. Our kids love the sticky rice & egg. The food is excellent. Great service! Great staff! more

not great 6/4/2003

not great service, a little overpriced. outdoor seating is nice. wait staff never seems happy. Pros: outdoor seating Cons: price, service more

Sorry, but this ain't thai 12/19/2002

If you want bland food, go here. The green beens in my dish were from a can and the chicken was rubber. Terrible service to boot. Don't waste your time here with Thai Orchid and Typhoon right up the street. more

Dine on the deck 6/16/2002

Ran acrossed this place last week and wheeled in to check it out. I was very pleasantly surprised by the menu, the prices and the food...and dining on the deck was a bonus in the evening. On 23rd, but slightly away from the hustle, bustle parking nightmare. I will go back. Pros: Deck, Good food, Quick Service more

Good Thai 5/13/2002

Good noodle dishes and curries here. A little expensive for the portions, compared with other good Thai places. Great deck when it's sunny; dining room is also nice and bright. Pros: great deck Cons: small portions more
